Abbotsford,
So I have a new TB and intake manifold to install, I started with just the TB for now.

OMG There was so much gunk built up on the inside of the flap and into the intake manifold. I think it is all coming from the EGR, I know I can get a block of plate for that, but I dont want my engine light to always be on. Is there a way to diable your engine light completely, OR a way to stop your EGR from dumping all that SLUDGE into the intake manifold???

Thanks,
-Daryl

Any more info on wiring that resistor to keep the CEL from popping up after a EGR Blockoff?

What year is your car? I know in some '95s, if you just leave the electronic solenoid plugged in (but you block off the rest of the system) you might be able to avert the CEL.

If not, then I would try a 1megaohm resistor and experiment with it a little. I've never seen any definite resistor values for this, so it's basically up to you. You can try using a pot to adjust the resistance until you can get the CEL to stay off.

If you don't care about your ECU storing codes, you can just remove the light bulb that illuminates the CEL on the instrument cluster... of course, this can be undesirable if your car isn't an extension of your body and you can't tell when something is wrong.

For that TB (if you want) use carb cleaner and steel wool. I did that on mine and got it looking nearly brand new.

Honestly I would use SEAFOAM for this problem. It's made for this exact problem: Sludge buildup. You put it in your TB, run the car for 5 to 10 miles, then change your oil. All that gunky stuff will be in your oil pan afterwards, so you'll definately want to do an oil change after it has run it's course.

On many 97 and newer cars blocking off the EGR ad using a resistor wont stop a CEL. The ECU looks for the solinoid and it also looks for a change in the manifold vacuum when the EGR is opened.

So whats the fix???

Simple, make a block off plate or plug for the head. Install the blockoff plate between the head and EGR. NOw place a coupel washers between the EGR and blockoff plate at each bolthole. Now tighten the 2 bolts on the EGR, the washers will press on the plate to seal the head and the EGR will standoff the plate with the 2 washers.

What will happen? The EGR will remain closed sealing off the intake port that the EGR is connected to. When the ECU commands the EGR opened via the solinoid the EGR valve will in fact open cause a vac leak into the manifold with hot engine bay air. The ECU will have to adjust the IAC and relize the EGR system is present and working as designed, or so it thinks. No CEL, you win.

This has been tested by someone i knew on a local board, i never used it myself.

It wont be cool but it wont be hot enough to burn wiring either. The air passing through will be 100-150 degrees F not 1300 degrees F.

I might want to do that then. I don't like how hot that pipe can get with wiring harnesses so close to it.

Any place to buy that little block off plate (besides CI and their block-off kit) or do you have to just cut one out of sheet metal yourself?

Well, to tell you the truth, I've heard of problems with some EGR plates. The only GOOD, reliable block off plate I can think of is Mopar's.. I used the Mopar block-off once I went turbo, and haven't had any problems since.

I also recommend Sea Foam Deep Creep to remove the sludge. I used it this past weekend on the TB elbow, TB and at the mouth of the intake manifold. It worked well.

If you do this, buy fine or extra fine steel wool. NOT an sos pad.

I own the mopar egr block off kit. its expensive (aka overpriced) 49.99 + 8 shipping., but extremely high quality and the plates look great jet black. I bought it because i too hate concept illusions.
