Sludge in intake manifold

Yes, it's carbon build up from the EGR system. That pipe is carrying exhaust gas and recirculating it into the intake.

while you have everything off you might as well get some cleaner and clean that out some, but yeah like they are saying its normal.

i realize sludge is normal especially on boosted cars but the intake manifold i just pulled off my 1g had a MASSIVE amount of sludge that ruined a brush and took 2 cans of carb clean to get off. what could be causing that much of a buildup?? the compression is strong on all 4, it smokes only a tad when it first spools, not enough to even see out the rearview, and it doesnt launch the dipstick. im thinkin it may be a faulty pvc but i want to make sure before i do anymore buying parts (im already in it 500 ### i broke the timing belt while driving) anyone had it bad like this before?

Some of my intakes were pretty bad from oil build up. Too me that was normal with higher mileage DSMs. I always pressure washed them out really good. But that could be due to seals in the turbo leaking and getting all the way through the intercooler and up into the intake manifold. Easy way to check that is to see if there is oil buildup in your intercooler. Otherwise could be a faulty PCV system.
