someone help me pleaseee

do you think its worth giving it a try?
moving to AL and getting a license there

they might tell that i have points on my record but may not show the lapse insurance thing?

You could always try picking up the phone and either calling your insurance agent or the DMV/BMV of the state(s) you're interested in living in, and asking them about reciprocity agreements with your current resident state.

;)

Best of luck,

I'll be 21 in two weeks. I'm still on my family insurance (why would I not be?) and my rates are great. The family has a total of 4 cars and four drivers right now (parents, sister, my self). I pay 105 a month full coverage on a 1999.5 Volkswagen Golf 2.slow, with side airbags, anti-theft and day time lights. Car is the new model and is a 2dr hatch. I called a while back on a Evo and a 2.5RS.

Evo was 275 a month and the 2.5RS (2002) would be 163 a month. Both with standard features. Yesterday I had my mother go on thier site to see what a 1995 TSI would run (my acount number doesnt permit access till 25 in which I'm on my own account). The quote was to ADD the car to my inssurance would be ANOTHER $210 a month. She says the reason why its so high is because we would now have 5 cars 4 drivers.

Umm what? Many of my friends own several cars and with each additional car the cost added is minimal. One owned a 1993 GSX added a 1995 GS and it was an extra $25 a month total.

WTF. Does the GS/RS (2.slow) have signifiacantly lower rates then the GSX/GS-T? Will a Talon vs a Eclipse have different rates? I might have to go an turbo charge a freaken GS at this rate. (its an extra 17.99 - 28.99 a month for a moded car, mods are covered though :thumb: )

Unless you actually go in and talk to someone, online insurance rates are trivial at best. Even online quotes from your current provider can be way off. When I was first in the market, I was quoted 2,800 every 6-mo for minimal coverage on a GS-T. Granted I had quite a few points and a totalled BMW on my record then, I was able to find $250 full coverage every 6-months on my current car. After the points were off my record, my bill is well under $200 a month. Being on your parents plan helps alot, my family has had home and auto insurance with my company for as long as I can remember.

As for the debate between a GS/RS and GS-T/GSX, my company charges the same rate for PL/PD for any car in the same weight rating...I'd say get what you want and be happy with it. I'm glad I did that. Also, your insurance will take a HUGE drop as soon as your in the next age group (24ish). Also, be sure to take as many discounts as you can...good student, ABS, anti-theft, airbag, passive restraint, etc. Every little bit counts.

My insurance was lower on my GSX then it would be for a GS-T because they considered AWD to be a safety feature. See if you can talk your insurance into dropping the GSX rate because it would be safer then a GS-T, hell its worth a shot

It should go down with more cars than drivers, but you also need to see which car you are primary on.

And when you turn 25, it'll drop.

I'm 29, and my insurance for my '98 Grand Cherokee (full coverage and then some) and '93 Laser (liability only) run me $100/month.

Not that those numbers are extremely useful, because your rates also depends on where you live, etc.

YMMV.

Sorry to hear about your insurance troubles, but I may have some advice.

I bought a 95 eclipse GS when I was 21. My insurance ran me $540 for 6 months. I HAD been on my parents' insurance from 18-21, but when I got my own car, they made me go solo. I had a clean record for 3 years with Allstate as a primary driver though - this helped a lot. And this was in NY - an expensive insurance state.

I now live in NC, I just insured a 96 eclipse GST, today as a matter of fact, and it's running me $350-400/6 months, but I have a second car on my plan. The total for the two cars is around $750-800/6 months. I'm 23 now...if I didn't have a second car, my insurance would be right around $500/6 months for the GST.

My point, try going solo. You might actually get better rates than under your parents wings now. And shop around - Allstate has been good to me, but the company you're with has your history.

Another thing you need to check...are you the principle driver of TWO cars under your parents? That would make your share go up.

Good luck...

Going solo is out of the question. Company is USAA and I have my fingers crossed to get my own plan when I turn 25. (USAA is without a doubt the best Insurance company out there). This is also the major problem, the phone guys will only talk to my mother or father who could care less if I ever get my car insured and have no desire to call for qoutes.

Just trying to see if it would be cheaper to get a 2.slow and turbo charge it. :p

No, never cheaper never. If your only concern is insurance just get a gst/gsx because you don't save much if any. Along with all the work to turbo a nt car it will still be slow. And cost just as much. If they don't cover mods, then turbo'ing a nt is completely useless too, if anything happened your screwed, you get money enough only for a rs/gs, not all your extra goodies.

its all based on your previous driving record... i have a perfectly clean driving record and i pay like $160 a month for insurance... my parents dont have clean records so im sure it would be a little less if it wasnt for them. oh and we also have a new driver (my little sister) on the plan and im sure thats driving the cost of my car up to. just get the damn gsx and don't complain. my one friend is on his 6th car cause he keeps totalling them and he has a mazda 3 now and hes paying like $500 a month in insurance. it could be worse. dont let that hold you back from getting the car you want though. just balance your books properly. get enough for a down payment so that when you can afford to make monthly payments on the car and also pay the insurance. and don't forget for a few months during the year i think you get a break, at least with my insurance i do.

look, figure out how much you make, what you can afford and save until you can make payments that you can afford on the car as well as with your insurance... i pay $300 a month on my car because i can afford it and then another $160 a month for insurance. i make about $600 every two weeks.

You make 1200 a month and can afford 300 for a car payment and 160 for insurance... must be nice.

yeah it is nice. you missed the point wise ass. buy what you can afford and work out your books. some people make twice what i make and cant afford what i pay a month because they blow it on stupid crap. i have a friend who drives stupid broken cars all the time cause he blows all his money on weed and booze and he makes more than me. once again, i say, save until you can afford to make the monthly payments and the insurance payments.... hell, i pay less for my insurance than some do for their nextels every month.

I go through farmers insurance, who wants $940 (liability only, $1000 deductible) for 6 months of insurance on my talon.

The car is a 95' talon, bone stock to their knowledge, i'm 21, good student discounted insurance, family has other car and house under same account, i've got pretty much all the discounts it seems, with a PERFECTLY CLEAN RECORD, and I'm still getting raped.

I asked the lady why it is so expensive, and she said because it's a sports car.. which yes they are, but comon now... stock these things are 210 horse. my old ford taurus had more than that.

dont these rates seem kind of high?

Check out 21st century. Cheapest I could find. And I get free roadside assistance, which im sure you know is a good thing if you drive a dsm. :p

Man, 2 cars, 1 99 pasport full coverage, and my 90 talon TSi (Liability) I pay 111 a month... and that is with a year old ticket/accident even...

um...try living in jersey ( yea i know i dont live there any more but car is still registered there). I'm 19, i have ZERO tickets, and when the car was on my name i had to pay 330 a MONTH! just for liability, ohh and my car is 140 horsepower :| :thumbdown
So i switched to my parents name and now i "happily" pay only 140 a month... :|

It doesn't have as much to do with horsepower as it does the frequency in which some moron does something to cause a claim in that model car. Too many high-risk drivers pull bonehead maneuvers in DSMs so they're expensive to insure... Airbags, crash ratings, number of seats, etc. forumlate the base insurance but the risk category is the difference between that Taurus and your car.

When i got my gst i was 19 and i had to fork over about $1850 for 6 months. Thats full coverage on everything even with student discount etc. Since turning 21 however that has dropped to only 500 for 6 months, $1,000 per year so am pretty happy about that

Damn I got to add my talon to the insurance today...

Damn im really happy paying 160 a month for full coverage on a 97 corolla and a 00 impreza...

ahh well Talon should add too much if its just liability... AllState kicks ass :thumb:

I pay $1200 every 6 months with SF, but thats for full coverage on 3 cars(and 2 of them are turbocharged sports cars). This is one advantage of being OLD.

Do as Defiant says, and goto a broker. Then when you pass the age of 25, the larger insurance companies should be able to provide an exceptable quote.

And lower that deductable!!!

Good God, that has to suck a lot of ass. I'm 18, and pay slightly north of 800 a year for my '92 TSi AWD.

Edit : and that includes everything except collision.
