Ok, cool we're talking about the same thing. Don't worry about that special tool. A pickle fork/tuning fork will work just fine. I've done it a hundred times. A couple secrets to using them. A) lube it up...grease, penetrating oil, or even engine oil. B) It's obviously a wedge shape, but not symmetrical, put the flat/non angled face on the part that won't do the moving(in your case it will be the control arm), and the angled face on the part that will move(the steering knuckle/spindle). Give it a couple of good whacks.

There are 2 sizes of pickle forks, make sure you get the one for the ball joints, if you use the tie rod end fork, it will damage the ball joint. But really, nothing to worry about...just have at er.

In fact I broke TWO 1/2" breaker bars by doing this. I gave up, the only way it is coming off is with oxy-acetylene.

Best tool ever: Impact Wrench

You can even have your car lifted and just use the impact wrench on those axle nuts and they'll come right!

You can get an electric one if you don't have an air compressor. It's definately worth the investment.

Yes, most definatly! I have had to take off my front half axels twice in the past month, and both times I've done so the passengers side inner cup did not want to come off the tranny.

My passenger side axle was stuck in the knuckle/hub. I had it pressed out with a 12ton press and then took the knuckle(ABS) to Mitsu just for shits. It would be 300$ roughly with my discount through my local shop to repair the knuckle from the press. I just went to the local pick-and-pull junkyard and got myself a non ABS knuckle/hub assembly. Cost me $26 and I'm a happy camper now.

Edit: I got my new passenger axle from Raxles. Very good and easy company to deal with.
