Installed my Walboro 190 but have a possible issue and question?

Hey all,

Last night I installed my Walboro 190 fuel pump and today on the way to work I noticed that every now and then, I would have a fresh faint smell of fuel coming from the assembly area under the rear seat.

Now I struggled with that PITA white ring for a good half-hour or more last night to get the assembly screwed back into the hole. I pressed the rubber gasket between that white ring and the edge of the fuel assembly, and then busted my butt to get it firmly screwed into the hole. It seemed like after getting it as hand-tight as possible, when I switched to the hammer & screwdriver technique to continue tightening, after a few whacks the ring would lose its grip and the assembly would pop back up from the hole.

So I finally got it where it was very snug by hand-tightening and was able to give it a few whacks with the h&s technique. I pulled at it quite a few times and also tugged on the metal lines coming out from the top, and the assembly appeared to be tight as can be.


When I get home tonight I will pull the rear seats & metal plate back off to see if the assembly is loose. I unlatched the seat when I got to work to see if any fuel had escaped past the metal plate, but it was totally clean. I smelled a strong odor of fuel from underneath though, so I'm wondering what the deal is. So let me wrap this up with a couple questions:

- With a Walboro 190, should there ever be any fuel odor?

- Assuming the darn white ring isn't on tight enough, or it popped off again while I was driving, HOW in the HECK do I get that bugger on there properly? The VFAQ writeups didn't have any useful information about HOW to get it back in there. They just basically said, "Get it on there TIGHT, buddy! Lotsa luck!" Although the one VFAQ did mention turning it counter-clockwise first to seat it, I tried that as best as I could but it didn't seem to make a difference in getting it seated. HELP!!

- Was I correct in combining the ring, rubber gasket, and assembly together before trying to push it down and screw it in? If not, where am I supposed to place the gasket?

I was an idiot when I did mine, and tried putting the pump assembly/rubber o-ring in as one piece. Don't do that. Put the o-ring on/in the tank, and then drop the pump assembly in. Makes it a lot easier, and then the white top part should go on a little easier.

You may have had part of the o-ring sticking out, making getting the white lid harder to get on/only allowing it to go so far.

Sounds like that makes 2 idiots then!

Where exactly is the o-ring gasket supposed to go? On the inside or outside of the tank hole? I originally tried putting it inside before putting the assembly in, but it seemed to be too big around and wouldn't line the hole properly. I dunno, maybe I need to play with it a bit more.

On the inside. Push some of it into itself, so it's out of round, and put it in. Then, smooth it out with your fingers. It's a nice, snug fit.

It's in correctly now. You were right about it being snug. When you try to first put it in though you think it's going to flop off and fall into the tank.

It seated nicely and the white ring went on nicely after a little playing. Went for a drive to get gas and rinse the Talon and the smell of fuel was completely gone and never came back. On my way home from work earlier though, man, it started getting BAD. The last couple of miles I smelled like a gas pump. Not good. All better now though.
