Ignition box needed for top-end power?

I'm not so much focus on running a coil-on-plug setup, but with a built head I'm intending to top out at at least 9500 rpm and making over 600whp. Will it be necessary to have a MSD DIS-2 or Dynatek ARC-2 for that high of top-end?

If an ignition is needed, I've heard people say that the Dynatek ARC-2 is better, but has anyone ever installed it on a '90? And what MSD DIS-2 do people usually use, the 6211 Plus High Output or the 6512 w/ Boost Timing Master?

The ARC-2 provides more spark energy and primary voltage plus it is a small ignition box. As far as do you need it, I'm not certain but I won't dare relying on the stock ignition for going above redline which isn't even of the stock tach.

The stock ignition system is indeed very decent, but becomes less efficient past 300 HP with increasing boost level and/or RPM. Since our ignition system utilizes wasted spark strategy, the charge time of the coil is reduced at high RPM where the coils become less saturated. Although this isn't such a problem with the stock redline, there are much greater demands the ignition system must meet at high boost levels and increased density of the intake charge. Simply put, as the pressure in the cylinders increase with the increase of the mass of the A/F mixture, the voltage required to jump the gap of the spark plug increases as well. The most common sign of the ignition system not being able to keep up is high RPM misfire at high boost levels and/or very rich A/F ratios.

Guess that answer my question.

Put it this way:
Anything above 600-650WHP, you would need ann ignition box. MSD-DIS2 is POS. I hear, that people say Dynatec ARC-2 is very good and reliable. I don't have it yet, but about to buy soon. On 1990 instalation should be the same, but the plug is different. Don't know how but different. May be you could use 1991 and up PLUG...

I want to get the Dynatek, it is a lot cheaper, but the '90 ignition is different from the 91-94 and the 2g. I'd have to rewired it for scratch, they don't make for a harness for the '90 or even the rest of the 1g.

From what I've read on the link forums dynatek arc-2 is the way to go or M&W if you have the money. stock ignition can hold it's on but you will need to gap smaller and smaller unlike with an aftermarket setup.
