Hey guys I have a idle surge question (ya i kno). Ok first things first when I try and start my car it wont start unless I cycle the key like 15 times after that it will start however the idle surge is so bad on startup that it will die if I dont keep giving it gas. But when the car is warmed up u can start it up with ease and the idle surge isnt as bad it goes up and down like 100rpm or something like that not to sure. I have already: took the throtle body off cleaned it off, put on a new tps sensor, rehooked up the egr valve and coolant temp sensor vaccum because they were reouted for some reason, put on a new isc, fixed a boost leak with better gaskets (however i have not checked for actual boost leaks), exhaust manifold had a crack in it replaced that with a header, and the timing has been check and everything is good. Ok now the bad: I use to have an afc in it and i took that out because when a friend pulled on it it shut off, ill have pure tuning dick with that later, I am running a 2g maf sensor and have no idea if it even works, the injectors are stock, I am running rich, the fake ass hks ssq bov is shot and I will be getting a new one just dont have the funds for that right now. I think that is everything I can think of but I may have forgot somethings but I need you guyes expertise! Please help me!

my car is a 1991 mitsubishi eclipse gsx

Is there a check engine light on? My car does this when I release the key too soon and it didn't get a chance to start and then start it again. Third time it starts up fine. Does it surge when you're driving? If it's having crazy idling rpms, it could be the idle air control valve getting stuck.

But what I would do first is fix all the known problems and see if it makes a difference. If you need a blow off valve, try to find one in a junkyard or craigslist. Even if it's just a stock one, it's better than nothing.

If the light's on, I'd take it to any shop or parts store and get the code(s) printed off. It could be anything from a clogged cat to a bad misfire. The check engine light can narrow it down a lot.

Good luck finding a place to read OBD1. I can't find any.

Sounds like you've got quite the amount of fixing to do. Fix all of the problems you mentioned and do a BLT and see what happens.

If you just want to get rid of the surge, but don't mind a little higher idle, just pull the throttle closed switch, the plug on the top left of the throttle body, just a one wire connector.

First, what does OBD1 mean? I don't understand all the abbreviations I've seen used and couldn't find a thread to explain them.

And not even Autozone? If a car has a check engine light, there has to be something to read it, otherwise why have it? What about a dealership?

Exactly what he said. If you wanted to troll I guess you could go to autozone with an OBD1 car and try to force them to scan it. They are so damn dumb.

actually orileys does have a obd1 tester I believe but ill try checking them myself. Autozone has great deals but some of the people there are very dumb. Wasnt it like 95 was when they switched over from obd1 to obd2? I have straight pipe no cat LOL. Are you guys sure that the maf sensor isnt causing those probs. What about the intake manifold gasket could that possibly cause it also?

Any malfunction with the intake system can cause an idle surge. I personally had a blown intake manifold gasket and it caused a hell a problems. You can either pull the intake manifold off or do a BLT.

95 is when mitsu did it, it wasn't mandatory till '96

That makes sense now. I've found Autozone people to be a lot smarter than Advance Auto. It took three trips to get the right control arm from them. Lol.

Of the 2 dsm's ive had I always blockoff the egr and ICS. I got sick of the stepper motor in the ICS losing time and having to reset them. I set the idle at 1000rpm and eliminate all the unnecessary vacuum lines. Still get 29mpg on the highway(awd) and don't have any problems with idle surge. Cars will idle a little low on cold start but has never bothered me. Im running the stock computer with all my cars. And wow this is an old thread LOL
