idle problem and grinding when i shift

I have a 92 talon body with a 92 eclipse 2.0l motor, and on the start up it will idle up and down going from about 1.5k to 2.5k while in neutral or coasting to a stop. Once it warms up a little bit it ends up running fine, but i figured it was still a problem that needed dealt with. Part 2 of this, when i shift into 3rd or 4th it grinds it doesn't happen all the time(I try to be really careful when shifting) but it always happens when i gear down so i try no to gear down. I ended up getting a new tranny but stayed the same, I thought the possibility of 2 bad trannys in a row that did the same this wasn't to great. Any suggestions on the idle or shifting problems?

Idle surge for the first one, and you most likely need to adjust your linkage for the second.

alright thanks, and how would i go about dealing with those, i'm still new to this area of cars

take it to a good local mechanic. if you want to do this yourself though, research on here any info you can find about doing both and also get a haynes manual.
