I went to the drag track and broke the shaft of my 14b!

I never guessed that would be what broke. It sheared off just inside the inner lip of the compressor bearing. When I got it home and took off the center section and compressor housing, I noticed that the entire turbine wheel and remaining shaft was totally missing. The only evidence it was ever there was that it mangled up my 02 sensor on the way through the exhaust.

Some things to note, I missed third gear and it seemed to break after I got it into third. I had safety wired the wastegate shut and was spiking to 27 then falling to 20. I was using "no lift to shift" with DSMLink. Oh, yeah, it took 8 quarts of oil to get me home. I was a huge freight train on the freeway.

Is this common, or has this happened to anyone else? Could a slow-opening/modified 1g BOV have helped cause this damage?
Thanks,
-Jesse

Jesse,

OMFG, the 1g BOV didn't cause your 14b to self destruct!!!! Wiring the wastegate shut and spiking the boost to 27psi Killed that puppy!!! Find yourself a used 14b, leave the wastegate alone, get a MBC set it to 18psi and be happy with the power your making there. IF you want to run that much boost (27psi) buy a 60 trim and then tune with DSMlink.

Yeah, so I watched the in-car video I took of the pass where I broke the turbo, and I noticed that I was just hitting peak spike in boost, and it was actually up to 30 psi! That's pretty good for a 14b. It didn't last through it though. Maximum 14b boost, for me, was 30 psi. I did have some knock, but it wasn't really bad. The rest of the engine held up fine, except the 02 sensor. The turbine and shaft just crushed it to piss.

Excessive shaft speeds killed it.

What are you doing running 30psi on the 14b? That's way beyond the efficiency of that turbo.

Work smarter, not harder.

wow you arent the brightest crayon in the box.. Like they tell Brian Spillner on fast and furious 1 when he "breaks his intake manifold welds" "was that fun!?"

BTW, check your intercooler and piping for the rest of the pieces

It was fun blowing the turbo. Now I have a story to tell everyone, and I know 30 psi kills 14b's.
As far as track time's go, they were still crappy. 13.8@95. My 14 b was too restrictive to get me there faster with my current mods. The bottom line is that the 14b is relatively cheap, readily available, and going to come off my car anyway because of the T04B V-trim that landed on my door today.

dont make excuses for your lack of driving or tuning skills. people have gone 12s on the 14 and i have gone 13.5 on mine in the rocky mountains. More boost doesnt mean more power, especially on the 14b

Ha.. Well, Too bad your motor didn't let go and create a hole in the block or something. Maybe then it wouldent be ''fun'' and you would actually learn not to even try to race a car that is ghetto rigged together :notgood: :toobad:

"OMG My DsM Is SoOo UnReLiAbLe, What did I do wrong"

At least you didn't start a thread with that title. :notgood:

:( This has turned into quite the bashing thread. I asked: Is this common, or has this happened to anyone else? Could a slow-opening/modified 1g BOV have helped cause this damage? What about some input on this instead of concentrating on telling me what you think of me.

If you don't have an answer for my question, please don't post. It would be considerate for most of you to delete your posts as they are only clogging up this thread!
Thanks,

A slow opening BOV could trash a turbo, but it'd have to be opening up pretty slow, or not at all causing the air to slam into the compressor wheel. IMO you pushed to much boost through the thing and you should have known better.

Your right we have been bashing a bit. but the fact of the matter is that the 14b can't run that much psi regardless of what other mods you do to your car. Do you have any idea how fast that thing has to spin to boost that high? I am guessing you don't have an egt because if you did you would probably be right off the gauge. That is also the reason why you ran so slow. I have ran 13.5 on spiking to 19 and settling to 18 on my old 14b. Just thank Jesus that you didn't predetonate so hard that your steering wheel didn't fall off at that boost. :p Buy a 16g and at 16psi it will be faster and healthier than that setup. I gotta give you props though, you my friend have some testicular fortitude.

13.6 @ 98 mph only 13psi on my 14b... (on my last DSM)

I also ran a 13.5 @ 98.8 with only 300$ pressbent 3" exhaust and 10$ mbc @ 15psi before i did the other mods to that car...

Yea i useto spike my 14b at 22psi LOL and i thought that was alot. But that was when i was fiddling with the mbc cuz i just repalced that ### 2gn bov boo on that plastic pita. So i had to figure out how to get the mbc just right for 14psi.

yea im running 14psi on my 14b and i ran a 13.6 heheh but dsmlink is in the mail so i hope to run 18psi with it before the 16g or 50trim goes on this summer i cant decide
