ok i bought my 14b from my Marine recruiter b4 I left for boot with no shaft play at all. And now after awhile im seeing some in and out shaft play, its not bad but last week before my greddy knock off bov install i had no shaft play. And now i have some play, i did have some comprseor surge for 2 hours, but that shouldn't diff right? I just want to know if I need a 16g or no?

Compressor surge doesn't normally cause thrust wear- surging loads the shaft in ways that cause the journal bearings to rub the housing instead of staying suspended in oil. This would cause up/down play- not in/out.

Did the turbo come from a car with a blown engine? If so, there's a good possibility the single oiling hole in the thrust plate might've been clogged with metal before you ever bolted it to your car.

Regardless, thrust wear tends to get worse very quick....either rebuild the turbo yourself or get it rebuilt before you ruin both wheels. Unlike up/down play where there is an "acceptable" tolerance before the wheels hit the housings, there should be NO noticeable in/out play. The tolerance between the compressor wheel and cover is so tight that any in/out play will cause the wheel to rub the housing, ruining the compressor's efficiency if / when you ever rebuild it.

Im getting up and down play, not in and out. How much up and down play is acceptable? And no the turbo came off a running 1g that was swaped into a 2g talon.

That's not what your initial post stated; this makes more sense and could have been caused by the surging.

How much up and down play is acceptable?
Probably around .015" is the limit. I'd recommend that it be rebuilt if anything greater than .015" exists or if you can force the wheel to hit the housing at all while spinning the turbo.

Yea sorry about that i meant to say up and down. How can i measure the play? Do i need to take the turbo off or just the intake? Also how worth while is it to rebuild a 14b?
