Hey guys I bought this turbo about a month and a half ago! It was practically new from Turbo Lab! There a great company that sells great turbos! I just was curious to see what some of you think about this turbo! It is a TD05H-20G and has roughly 150 miles on it! The shaft play wasn't as much as it is now. The compressor wheel does not come in contact with the housing at all and the turbo shows no signs of any problems boosts 15 psi great! I was just inspecting the wheel during a BLT and noticed the play! The turbos oil feed comes from the head using the oem style oil tube. It is also drained using the factory return line! It also utilizes oem coolant feed and return lines! What do you guys think?

The radial play is somewhat excessive in my opinion but I have seen and run worse without the turbo failing. That being said, the axial play is scary, there should be none. I would tear down the turbo and take a close look at the thrust surface before I continued to run it. I'm betting it will need to be rebuilt.

That is quite a bit of play. I would not run that any longer without a rebuild. It will eventually come in contact with the housing and will me a more expensive repair in the future.

Seems like an okay amount of play to me. Remember that the bearings will have that "cushion" of oil.

The turbo is still on the car so the CHRA isn't dry. You're not going to take up the radial play with a "cushion" of oil. Anyway, the axial play is the determining factor here... There should be no axial (in and out) play whatsoever and video clearly shows that there is. Tear it down and rebuild it.

Thanks for all the help guys! There is no in and out play what so ever! In one of the videos I attempted to pull it in and out but there didnt seem to be any play. When I tug and push on the wheel it does not move. Looking at the video that was posted by WOTDSM my shaft play more resembles the first turbo. The turbo still falls under the 2 year 30k warranty that turbo lab offers when you buy a turbo from them. The oiling and cooling was all from the OEM sources. I will post another video with needle nose pliers once I get home.

My mistake then. I thought for sure I saw axial play during the second video (at 28 seconds the fins look like they're moving in and out). The radial play is still excessive but like I said before, I've seen and run worse so...

Being that it's under warranty, I would send it in; at the very least, the builder can look at it and make the determination.

Thanks alot for the help! I'm in contact with them! There really great when it comes to customer service! I just wanna be sure before I go through the trouble of taking it out and sending it in!

That's too excessive for a turbo that is installed on the car with an oil supply- if that's the same amount of play that the turbo had when you go it, then the journals are likely out-of-spec. Often when the turbo is off the car such play would be acceptable as the oil will have drained from the journals, but that unit is installed and still receiving oil.

Something could have been overlooked, but personally I wouldn't feel comfortable sending out a turbo with excessive play after being rebuilt without making the customer aware that their journals are close to needing bored to the next size. I've been in that situation before and had guys go either way depending on what they want to spend, but this being sold to a new owner would mean my name is on the line.

If the play wasn't that bad when you got it but it's progressively getting worse, could mean anything from poor balance to oil supply/contamination issues.

Thanks Justin! I guess I'm gonna have to take it off and send it in. Better safe than sorry.
