I don't want to sound like I am racing around everywhere.

What would be a good exhaust setup?

high flow cat, resonator, silencer?

3" is deep toned, put a dynaflow muffler on it and a glaspak and if you want to spend the money a high flow cat and you should get good flow and be quiet my 3" strat threw isnt that loud at all. good luck.

You know I have also been wondering about what a good "stealth" exhaust system would be. I realize that having a better flowing exhaust is a good investment but I also don't want to sound like some riceboy driving around with a big fart can on the back either. It will be interesting to see some of the recommendations.

well i ran 3" dp with no cat and 3" strat back under tank then 1 bend at about 30 deg, to tip it back up alittle and tord the exhaust opening and puta very cheep can on and it dosent sound like a fart can at all it sounds very nice and very very deep more of grumble. i love it and everyone else that has heard it liked it and i did it very cheep i have about $160 into the hole thing granted i had axcess to a mandral bender and by all means its not all ss but the dp is.

if u want a not so loud exhaust just get a catback Megan racing sells the 2g awd now that has an adapter piece for a stock cat and one for a 3in test pipe. so if u want to upgrade the downpipe and cat later u can. this will keep those decibals down for now and then later your going to get used to it and want more power. plus the megan exhaust comes with a silencer piece that can go in the muffler tip to bring the noise down and its under 400$!!!!! cant beat it:thumb: looks like the APEXi N1 muffler. fitment is perfect. i just test fit one on my 97gsx

i had a local shop build me a 2.5 turbo back, flanged cat so i can remove it at the track and run an open header, and a knock off muffler. it was not very loud at all until i got on it. one nice thing about a turbo car is the turbo does help with the exhaust note. it will sound good...just do a search for dsm exhaust clips. that will tell you how some sound.

Okay, I read through the thread and through the other provided links (thank you), and there are a lot of different opinions.

For me, what I am looking at right now is taking my car to a shop and having them order the necessary 3" piping because it will be cheaper that way. I want to be able to have the parts that I want them to put in to lessen the sound.

Resonators - I read that to get a "real" resonator it is expensive and not worth it.

Glasspack - I read it is cheap and works well but rusts quickly.

Muffler - I've heard that magnaflow mufflers are the way to go with turbo's. How restricting are silencers?

Cat - I need a new one, my current one is cracking...I need suggestions on this. Are there any good, inexpensive high flow cats?

Thank you for all the replies.

When I was shopping around for an exhaust setup, I was also looking for a quiet but reasonably good-performing exhaust and decided on an Apexi Worldsport 2 cat-back along with a Road Race Engineering's 3" downpipe and 3" high-flow cat. So far, I've been real happy with this setup in terms of decibels - it sounds almost as quiet as stock, just has a bit deeper sound. These components also bolt-up together nicely since RRE's downpipe and cat are designed to bolt right up to an Apexi N1 or Worldsport cat-back exhaust. Performance also seems to be pretty decent, although I am still running the T2small.:)

I've been looking for a similar setup, for what I'd like to do (Strip/autocross). I think this fits the bill http://www.quicktimeperformance.com/QTEC/
So what Im thinking of is a 3" dp and a high flow cat then the cut out. Does any one know if there would be a loss in perforamance with this versus the dp hfc and then 3" catback. John

I spent quite a while piecing together the correct setup for me, as I don't like all the noise or "Folgers Can" exhaust look either, LOL.

Here is what I decided on:
Buschur Racing 3in. stainless steel downpipe
Buschur Racing Hi Flow Cat
Thermal R+D Catback/Muffler

This setup is costly for sure, but has a deep, throaty tone, and is relatively quiet at idle. (Getting mine installed soon, and I'll be sure to post sound clips).

I have an Apexi 3in system on my 2g with the high flow cat it is low not high popping lame ricer sound and its not that loud it's kinda expensive but you get a full system. It sounds good and like I said it's not that loud, where I live any exhaust system mod is illigal but they usually go by sound more than sight and I haven't been pulled over and I've been by plenty of cops.

I have 3'' Thermal R&D (research & development) full system.
Full 3'' from the turbo back w/ no cat.

Does not sound like a 4-cyl. at all. Very deep & pretty quiet.
