I think it's my transfer case?

Well I just replaced my 98 Eclipse RS with a 95 Talon TSi AWD. The car has 66,xxx miles on it, dealer I bought it from said the thing had a blown turbo. So I found a 14b and was going to replace it... Turbo isn't blown at all...

When I start driving, everything is fine, tranny shifts smooth. Then as soon as I hit about 3k rpms, I start to hear a sound coming from the lower engine area. It sounds almost like a really bad rattling or like a huge hole in the exhaust. Then I let off the gas and it dies down. Doesn't matter what gear I'm in either. 5th gear crusing on the freeway at 60-65 at 3k rpms+ the sound is constant. And I feel a thumping coming from under the car right below me at the same time (kind of thumping like if your wheels were off balance).

Had a mechanic friend that used to work at Mitsu look at it and he believes that the input/output shaft bearings are bad in the transfer case. Maybe? I'm still learning the 4G63 and especially the AWD. I read about the transfer case recall, could probably look into that I think.

Any info would help!

LOL....sounds very familiar!
Yes, I had the same problem at 2k rpm.
I thought it's the exhaust at 1st, but then I found out the hard way.
The sound was comming from under the car, right by the center console.
My T case locked the rear wheels on the freeway at 70MPH+, and belive me you get a real bad feeling out of that one!
In my case the TC was roast bc it lost all the fluid.
I would chk the fluid 1st, but most likely the TC is damaged already by driving it like that.
Don't drive it to much untill you figure what's the problem, bc you are a hazard on the road if the TC locks up on you!
Do some research abt the TC recall.
best luck to you!:dsm:

You could have a bad U-joint. That would couse a thumping felt under you, it would be coused by a bad Carrier support bearing going out.
