I think I turned my crank the wrong way

I have a 91 GS with a 1.8 and the weekend before last I replaced the water pump but during the replacement I turned the crankshaft, just a little, and knocked the car out of time. I had somebody that was supposed to come help me fix it during the week but he never showed so I got a chiltons and reset the time myself, made sure the oil pump was in the right postion and not 180 backwards and when I put everything back together last saturday I turned on the car and it ran but I started to notice an odd sound, sort of metal on metal tapping, and the engine was smoking a little bit. Aside from the noise and the smoke everything was running fine so I gave it some gas and the noise got a little worse so I shut the car off. I went back to the book and noticed that it said to only turn the crank clockwise and I'm pretty sure I turned it several rotations in both directions while removing/replacing the belt sprokets and pulleys so I guess my question is this... What the hell did I just do and how much of a pain is it going to be to fix it??? :ohdamn:

I would take it all back apart and recheck everything. Make sure belt is properly tensioned, all timing marsk are lined up and oil pump is set correctly. Take your time on reassembly and make sure everything is %110.

Something is still out of time. A properly timed engine will run butter-smooth, with no excessive noise. Turning your crank a few rotations in the wrong direction is not going to hurt anything.

1.8's are a dime to work on. You can teach a 10yr old how to do a belt on a 1.8L

What you do with the oil pump sprocket: put the pointer straight up and let it go. If it rolls to the right (clockwise), you're off 180*.

Roll the sprocket one turn, stop it where the pointer on the sprocket is straight up again and let go. It should roll to the left (counter clockwise), and if it does, then the balancer is in phase with the crank.

Then, align the marks all up, put the belt on, tighten up the tensioner when you have the long side of the belt with a quarter-inch deflection, crank the main sprocket the required 6 revs to see if all marks align back up, put it all back together, drop it off the stands and go drive it.

Get it warmed up then do the base 5*BTDC required timing wih the ECU timing lead grounded.

Good luck - DSM

Turning your crank backwards wouldn't hurt anything but sounds like its still outta time make sure your 1 cylinder is at tdc and the timing mark is in the right place then check tour oil pump to make sure its right as stated above . Good luck :)

OK so I had somebody come over to take a listen and he put his hand on the t-belt cover and the noise stopped. I forgot the two bolts that hold the back section to the rest of the engine and the brand new belt i put in was rubbing on the inside of the cover while it was moving and the metal on metal was the piece that was supposed to be mounted tapping off, most likely the smoke was just coolant being burned off, had a coolant tank explosion before i replaced the water pump, noticed that i need a new starter though so yay there's still stuff to play with thanks for all the advice anyway though
