I am looking to see if there is anything im missing from my rebuild list before I put an order in with a vendor.

I was originally just going to push the rods out of the block hone it and do the rings. The more I thought about it I have decided to pull the block and check and replace everything just to make sure.

Here is what im planning on doing.

ACL race bearings - rod
ACL race bearings - main
ARP head studs (already has but im replacing with new)
ARP main studs
Cometic complete engine gasket kit
Cometic mls 1.3 mm head gasket
timing kit with
- stock timing belt
- new tensioner
- new pully
- new idler pully
new Wiesco rings

Since im new with the 4g63 is there anything that i should swap out or also do?

Thanks
Matt

Yeah I was looking at the gates water pump and was going to look at how warn the oil pump gears are. The block was rebuilt like 5k miles ago by the previous owner but it blew the head gasket and killed the rings.

Oh man. How do you figure you need rings? Do you have a dial bore gauge? Or at least a set of snap guages and a 3-4" mic? I hope you have wiseco pistons, the rings are not interchangeable.

When the head gasket went he most likely overheated the engine and glazed the cyl. walls and or cooked the rings.

My compression was lower than I would like in one of the cyl, so i figure ill do all the rings. Yes i have .020 over wiesco 9.1 compression pistons so i have the correct rings already. As far as the correct tools for the job yes i have everything i need to rebuild an engine. This isnt my first build just my first 4 cyl. I was into mitsu twin turbo v6's before the dsm came along.

Well shit, if only one cylinder has low compression just do the head gasket and see if that takes care of it. Probably will since it is blown.

Screw doing the rings for now.

Please keep the thread on topic, Kurt was just trying to help you make sure you've got the right tools you need to do the job. No sense turning this into an argument or pissing contest...

Sorry didnt mean for it to come across like that. Just meant to say that yeah I have the tools and im not a total noob.

Head gasket was already done it still has low compression. Im not a hope it works kind of guy. I would rather reach into my pocket and spend some cash to make sure its done right. Honestly I could prob drive the car with no issues but i would like to know that if anything else got messed up when the head gasket went.

Oh and I plan on running 25-30 psi when im done building the motor so I would rather be safe than sorry.

So now it doesn't have a blown headgasket, just low compression?

Have you tried putting a little oil in the cylinder and checking the compression that way to give you a better idea if it's really the rings?

yeah when i did the wet test they jumped up to around 210 and the one low cyl, was at 175. That is a bigger gap than i am comfortable with.
