I need answers!!

Okay maybe I'm missing something but how do you set base timing on a 2g (95) 7 bolt engine (no CAS). All I've understood was that the plugs need to be grounded to see if its right but what do you do if its not right, what do I adjust or does it adjust automatically when it's grounded?
