I Hate My DSM, or My DSM Hates Me [Merged 12-8]

I get home from my friends house and my car slipped out of gear rather harshly.. (I have an AT). I put the car in park and the idle went from 1000 to 2000 rpms, up and down, up and down. WTF!?!? NO CEL came on at all. Any ideas?
 
Could be a vaccum leak, BISS screw, etc... Could be anything, really. However, I don't get how it slipped out of gear :confused: That seems weird. Were you driving while it did this? Have you put it in gear after this happened? Give some more details, I'll try and help :thumb:

Dunno if you have an AT or not, but I wouldn't really say it slipped, but it shifted hard into first or 2nd. Usually you don't even notice but this was a hard shift. Nothing has been changed what so ever. I checked my TPS when the idle was jumping from 1K - 2K to see if it was changing or not and it read 0% throughout the whole thing. I checked my tranny fluid, that was fine, Oil, that was fine. I'm reading -12, -15 on vac at idle and -20 when I let off the gas. Thanks for replying.
 
UPDATE -


I started the car this morning and my idle shot up around 1500 rpms and held. I put the car in gear and it dropped down to 950 or so. I got down my street towards the main strip where I live and at the light, my idle dropped to about 450 - 500. The radio even turned off and then back on again with the low idle. Because of it and the car felt like it was going to stall. ISC motor? TPS? There are NO CEL's coming on what-so-ever. Thanks for listening.
 
Here's something f'd up.. I started the car up and had the hood opened. both fans started to spin, then went off, then a minute later, they both went on again. My idle timing is around 19 and I don't know if that's a good thing or bad. I hope my ECU isn't bad..
 
I drive an AT like you. This sounds like what happened to me. the battery was dying, and my tranny thumped thru the gears like mad. my car would sorta run ok if I was driving it, but if I started it and let it idle for a while it'd die. Swapping the battery fixed it for a while. Then the alternator crapped, probably from running all the time prior. I finally got a rebuilt alternator that works, and an optima redtop, no problems since.

my car always hits 1500 rpms when I start it, and dies down to 700 when it's warmed up. my vacuum is 17 at idle, 21 or 22 when I let off the gas.
 
Thanks for the help, guys, I disconnected the battery and let it sit for about 20 minutes. The car has been fine. I have no idea what happened. I hope my alternator is not on it's way out the door. Thanks for the advice.. My timing has returned back to 10 degrees or so on a cold start. I went for a drive and came back. It went down to 4-5 degrees so I think it's all good.
 
Disconnecting the battery wiped the ECU's memory so maybe just some corrupted data? I'd do some serious charging system diags. My car did some of the same stuff the day the alternator left this world.

i just blew my ball joint out and when that happened my tranny decided to take a crap. whats wrong is that its damn hard to put the shifter in 2nd and 4th and the shifter wont go left and right. any ideas what could have gone wrong? im just considering rebuilding the tranny i guess. while its being rebuilt, is there any thing aftermarket i should put in there? i really dont need a built tranny, im running a 20g. thanks.
 
Sounds like shift forks possbily........hard to say until you tear it apart. If you are looking to rebuild, i would reccomend at least upgrading to a double syncro 2nd gear, save yourself the headache in the long run. Contact John at shepracing.com. He is the man, and his rebuild prices are great.
 
the 2 i have never work... both the turbo or non turbo...

when i do have one working i can depend on it to break even though i dont drive it hard. I've had my 98 ford f150 for longer than both of my cars and i can ALWAYS depend on it to run. I've had it for 5 years and some months and it's never had a problem... NEVER!

I've had my gsx for a year this summer and it's only run for a month out of the year. no lie..

my gs i've had for 2 years this summer and it's only run for maybe 10 months out of 2 years...

I feel i deserve an award for dealing with these cars and still coming here promoting them and telling all my friends to get eclipses..

I should sell all 3 cars and get a 350Z. Then my life would be simple and happy... :cool:

Anyone else hate their cars?
 
Oh yeah I was looking in the classifieds section of the newspaper and I saw a 1969 Chevelle body for $700.

I been thinking about getting that then maybe spend another grand or 2 on an engine. I could have a nice fast muscle car for under 3 grand. But i'd have to spend money to make it look nice and what not. Oh well I guess i'm stuck with my DaSMn mistakes..
 
do it man. fix em up and sell em all. if thats what you feel is right and worth the money. either that or get a 98 or 99 gsx with lower miles. id say sell all the old ones and get something new. too many headaches.
 
right now im pissed... i just had a problem with my car today that cost me 250.00 but besides that ive never had one... maybe u got two lemons :-\
 
yes, they break, grind, bump, squeek, catch fire, act up, idle oddly, and sometimes have a mind of their own. its all part of loving the car. anyways, i hope everything works out for u. i've been carless for 5 months now (except for 3 days in there). i had to walk to classes every day, sometimes at 6am, sometimes at 10pm homeward at night. it really sucks. as much as i hate it tho, i keep hangin onto the hopes that my dsm will soon have the life it needs and i'll be happy as i can finally return to a world of boost.
 
I've pushed my n/t extra hard and the only thing I have to complain about (besides speed) is the hatch's window rattling. Maybe the previous owners beat them up internally, got some bad work done on em.
 
I've got bad idle surge, and i tried #dsm on irc.dsm.org, now i asked a simple question "is it a big job removing the TB, do i need to replace any gaskets if i take it off" .. so some guy "hal" responds with "if i have to ask im not qualified to do it"

What the hell is that?? so i continue arguing with this guy, i thought part of owning a dsm was being able to find help and become a mechanic, even if thats not what you want to do.. "making mechanics since 1990" or something i read somewhere.

Then someone says I need to prove i own a service manual to ask questions, whats up with that?? and some other guy replies that how he hates newbs like me that need to be babysat, hell i asked a simple question, now how to do it, god, i could figure that out.. anyhow, it leads to me saying that id idn't know there were rules for asking questions and some guy laughs and kick/bans me.. i swear, are these guys in some honda rice club on the side? cus i sure felt that.. isn't this site all about that? helping one another with problems or questions?

gotta love no-it-alls.... kids these days... LOL. anyway, pulling the TB.... theres a gasket in there between it and the intake mani. like any job your doing for the 1st time just take your time and ask/search if theres something your not sure of.:thumb:
