I am in the middle of rebuilding my HX40. I have a 6balde 60mm\12 blade turbine HX40. I am rebuilding the entire center section, new comp wheel and new 10blade turbine wheel. My old oil ring on the tubine side is burnt, worn down, and no good. Wheels contacted housing so everything needs to be rebuilt.
I ran into two issues. I have solved one I think.
Issue 1
The compressor bearing (#31 in image below) that came with the kit is too tall. My turbo didnt come with an oil baffle (#33) but the rebuild kit did. The turbo came with an compressor bearing with holes all the way around, and it came with the older style thrust bearing. I can tell the comp. bearing is too tall because I cant get the large snap ring under the comp wheel to fully seat. One tap on the turbine shaft and the snap ring pops out. I solved this by using the bearing it came with instead of the supplied bearing and baffle. I did use the newer style thrust bearing though.
Issue 2
The turbo spins freely, no wobble, no in and out, until I tighten the comp. nut. Finger tight it spins freely, just a little torque and it binds. Am I tightening it too tight. I dont have a torque wrench that reads inch-lbs. When it binds it is the oil ring on the turbine shaft rubbing the inside. I need to get this right before i loc-tite it down.
