So I have been having trouble with only getting heat for a few seconds and then it just goes to a lukewarm temperature. I am looking at the arm that controls the vent or recirculation and it seems to be broken maybe since it will go almost all the way in. I see through the glove compartment that it is moving a line back and forth when I move it, but not sure it is functioning fully.

My questions are

1. Is there a way to get behind the Hvac controls without taking off the dash

and

2. I am guessing that my flapper for heat is not functioning since I am getting heat for a few seconds and then it backs off to a lukewarm to cold temp. So is there a way to check this without taking off the dash?

For most HVAC repairs you will be pulling the dash. Unfortunatly the 2g dsm dash is a little stinker. I have done dashes in just about everything and my 2g was on the list of ones I liked doing the least.

Lol I was hoping that wasnt the case. I have turned the temp control all the way from cold and then once it goes to the end of the heat range I can hear a noise like something has been fully opened, so I guess it is not the flapper. The funny thing is that the heat will kick in for a few seconds and fade away and then if I turn it off and turn it on again like a few minutes later it does the same thing. Does this sound like a problem anyone has had and could give me advice

Haven't tried that since I have read other posts stating that if it was a t-stat that my temp gauge wouldnt be holding rock solid at the ~half way. So even if my engine temp is good could it still be the t-stat?

Pull out the two stops on the sides of the glovebox, drop the door, unscrew the two Phillips head screws and remove the glovebox. Your heat door adjuster cable may be off from what you're saying.

Ok dropped the glovebox and saw a cable that was right behind it. Was this the cable you were talking about Defiant. It is controlled by the air from outside or cabin slider.

Also I found the temperature gauge cable and it moves with the knob. I still dont see any flapper and can only hear it.

don't know if this could be the problem, but I took a picture. As I was following the temp cable I noticed that the other end that ends with a plastic white piece has some type of a hole/holding place in it and I am wondering if there was supposed to be another cable connected to it. It is hard for me to explain but here is a pic of what I am talking about

So what we are looking at is the temp knob cable and I am showing the white piece at the end that I "think" should have another end of cable that goes elsewhere. Am I right or wrong on this?

The top one is the outside air and the bottom one you show is the heater control. The bottom picture is outlined on 55-20 and 55-21 of the service manual. It refers to it as the air mix dampener? It really doesn't get into heat at all. The whole chapter is dedicated to A/C. I am kinda stuck with no heat too. Dam service manual!!

This is what was wrong with my car. The part you show is connected to the hot cold knob. It moves that piece in and out to open the flapper door. When I was installing my ECU I must have knocked the cable off the pin. Mine was not held on by anything. I am not sure if it was supposed to be? anyways I made a stop out of a paperclip which should work for a while and My heat is fixed.
