Alright a buddy of mine wants to sell me an engine (2g 7 bolt). well he has 2. one with a spun rod bearing, and one with a bad piston. but my question is how can you tell if an engine has split thrust bearings without knowing what year it came out of. he has the whole thing still together.

oh and should i take the one with the bombed piston or the rod knock? or i can just say i want the block with the rod knock and the crank from the one with the bad piston.

i agree take the bad piston, unless you plan to put a 4g64 crank in there and could talk him down on the engine as it being the worst cond.

i spun a rod bearing years ago before my rebuild and my crank was of course gone along with my rod.

There is really NO way to tell if the engine has a split thrust bearing without pulling the engine apart.

It is NOT split down the middle. Here is what it looks like (below).

thank you jeff! i am going there tomarrow and like i said he has the 2 blocks. and then he has a 2 2g heads. one in good condition, another with a few bent valves, and then he has 1 1g head. im probably gonna pick up the 2g head. hopefully i can talk him into giving me the good 2g head. then i can pick from parts to make a full engine. i will post a blog on it, and my new (well its old but i bought it 2 hours ago and i will paint it) tool box.

grab the 1g head if its in good condition in my opinion, even tho i have a 2g head on my 1g block..

thanks jeff. picked the block up ripped it apart and looks like i have split thust. but jeff why is yours in 4 pieces? the guy i bought the block from said it was rebuilt, reason for the bad piston was there was a melted valve on the top of it. the crank looks new or a reman, due to it having a light gray color and the block having a black color. pictures are attached..

Cause the one you are holding is NOT a split thrust bearing. Thats just a regular thrust bearing. All main and rod bearings HAVE to be cut into 2 halves or else you wouldn't be able to get the bearing over the crank weights.

The real split design is the picture I posted. Split meaning the Thrust part of the bearing is separate of the other parts of the bearing. This allows them to float and self align with the crank surface.
