1G How to fix Heat Soak?

My DSM gets heat soaked, and runs really hot after about 15 mins. The radiator is good, and the coolant is good, I am going to clean the intake manifold, and port that, and I also am going to clean the intercooler also. Also, would a 2G MAF and Manifold gain me more power?

Porting your manifold is a horrible idea unless you plan to port match the head as well, even then it's pointless on your setup. A 2g manifold is smaller than a 1g. A 2g maf flows more than a 1g provided you have a way to run it properly. What you call heat soak just sounds like your car is overheating, you need to fix that before attempting to port anything or add any other performance parts. How do you know your radiator is good? have you done a pressure test on the cooling system?

Regarding your heat soak issue, what fans are you currently running? Typically heat soak only causes overheating if you can't move enough air through the radiator core and out of your hot engine bay. A fan that moves a lot of air can help with that.

I see from the single picture in your profile that you're not running a heat shield. You can start trying to correct your heatsoak problem by adding one.

Also, ensure there is no air in the cooling system, and that it's full. Additionally, confirm the thermostat is operating properly, and is the correct temperature range.

I have two factory fans, both run well, and I did do a radiator pressure test. There is no air in the coolant. The fans are coming on too. Also, I have a heat shield for the turbo, should I put that on? Could I make my own aluminum heat shield for my manifold? It didn't have one when I bought it.

It's not really over heating, it just loses power, and it's very noticeable.

I would certainly put the heat shield back on the manifold for sure ..... check the coolant that its topped off and fresh ( coolant has an expected life span just like oil ) ....

You could be wring if your going by the stock water temp guage. On my spyder the needle would sit in the middle *normal any ware from 190-215 degrees. That's a huge difference and it would drag ass till I fixed that. Anyway, you need to find out what's over heater, water temp or ait..

Losing power and "heat soak" aren't objective. Is the car over heating? If not then what is happening? Car gets slow? Do you know the condition of ignition? Knock sensor? Compression? Is it tuned? Fuel delivery? Fuel filter? Ignition timing? Mechanical timing? You're trying to apply a solution when you do not yet know the problem. Give us more info please.

Heat soak is going to happen with the stock side mount intercooler, plain and simple. It's even more noticeable if you're running above stock boost. I noticed this and decided, in order to keep intake temps down for racing, I needed a front mount. I got the VRSF kit and it comes with everything needed, works great.

Just to give you an idea... after doing a few pulls, touch your throttle body elbow. It's going to be HOT. After doing a 3-minute race uphill, my TB elbow is only slightly above ambient temperature. Get a FMIC!

How hot is "really hot"? You mean the coolant temp is really hot?

Okay, get an exhaust heat shield on there first of all, and get a FMIC to fix your heat soak issue. What boost are you running through the stock side mount?

It's does it on stock boost, but I dialed it up to 18 for a few passes on the 1/4mi

It will still heat soak on stock boost pretty quickly. 18 is really pushing it for the side mount and a 14B, I doubt you're making much more power than you would be at 15 psi... Just do yourself a favor and get a FMIC, you'll be very happy you did. There's a reason most DSMers have one!

That's normal.

Turbo car = high underhood temps . Best things to do are have heat shields where they belong. Get the exhaust ceramic coated (mani, turbine and o2 housing). Also ducting for the ic and radiator really help. You can try running the fans always on to move more are. And turn the boost down alittle. Pushing hot air won't help you at all. Atleast until you can get a nice fmic for that 14b. Really fun turbo with the right mods

I tell you what.. ceramic coated heat shields are magic... my hood is cool to touch after an hour drive home after installing mine.

Of course its still toasty underhood but no where near what it was 2 weeks ago

Actually this is my fourth DSM, and I already have the performance parts, and I don't think a 2G MAF and Cold Air Intake will make it run hotter, it's called a cold air intake for a reason.

Let me be the first to say that a fmic will restrict air flow to your radiator so if it's getting hot it's not going to get better by blocking the air to the radiator with a fmic. If it's "heat soaking" then the intake charge is hot because the side mount can't cool the charge down fast enough. Some things to think out before you start down that path. Does the car still have the a/c condenser on it? It also blocks cool air from getting to the radiator. I run a air dam under my car to move air up to the radiator to help keep it cool. One from a mid 80's Camaro fits great FYI.

It's an Apexi cold air intake, and I have a 2G MAF in it too.

Yea there is nothing cold about that intake. I don't think they are even listed as a "cold air intake". It's just a filter and adapter. Regardless this is not the cause of your "heat soak". as mentioned before you need to check over everything in your cooling system.
