Ok so i've been doing research for about two weeks now and i have some Questions about heat soaking an intercooler. Exactly what is it? (i have some basic idea, but most explainations where not very clear) And how do you know if your intercooler has been heat soaked?

Heat soaking is just what it sounds like. When you run your car hard and long and it doesn't have adiquite air flowing to it all of the hot air going through it eventually takes away its ability to cool the air going through. You can tell easily by just putting your hand on the intercooler to see if its warm or not. Warmer it is, the warmer the air going into the intake mani. the more timing is being pulled, the less power you are making.

That's a great explanation. I'll try to add a little to it. The root cause of it is the hot compressed air from the turbo heating up the intercooler faster than the intercooler can cool the air down. Stock sidemounts heat soak pretty fast because they don't have a lot of surface area for passing air to absorb the heat from the fins.

You really can't tell for sure from in the car, but if you get out and feel the intercooler after a hard run, it'll be quite warm. And as mentioned, warm air = less power.

to reduce heat soaking of the intercooler, whenever you goto the track or out driving, carry a bottle of compressed air on ya. if you turn the can over and spray, it sprays out an icy substance. it will definately help you out.

Thanks guys. just what i was looking for... and the compressed air makes sense. thanks for the tip
