I have read all the threads and seen where everyone says this is a great cheap turbo and it is but in total I spent a bit more than I anticipated and here is a rundown of my total costs. Hope this helps someone out.

1. Used HX35 = $200 (Bought from another DSMer, in the wrecking yards here they go fro $120 but I was to busy to go hunt one down so another DSM guy made a profit.)
2. Rebuild for the turbo = $265 (bearings, shaft, wheels, and balance)
3. BEP Turbine housing = $275 shipped
4. Punishment Racing MV-S O2 housing with gate = $530 shipped (on sale, they are now about $590)
5. Misc. fitting to get oil to the turbo = $26 shipped (M12 X 1.5 to -4 AN adapter and -4 AN 90* fitting for oil feed line)
6. Gaskets from RRE = $57 picked up(Stainless Steel Turbo to manifold gasket and Turbo to O2 gasket)
7. 4" intake coupler and 2.5" 90* coupler = $37 shipped (from silicone intakes)

So the total cost to get a complete HX35 setup for my 2G GSX has been $1390. A huge part of this cost was that I was previously internally gated so I had to buy an external wastegate setup as well as the turbo.

**EDIT**
Here are pictures of the new components, Install pictures will follow when I have time to put it on.

I should have noted that the change to the Holset was made from an internally gated PTE-5031E so my water lines were already blocked off, my intake was connected with a 4" - 3.5" reducer, and the compressor outlet had a 2" -2.5" 90* coupler.

I may make some money back by selling my Evo3 O2 housing, the HD wastegate actuator from the PTE, and the couplers I am no longer using.

My other choice was an S-256ETT that would have been $1290 shipped with an internal gate. So it would have been roughly the same. For sure cheaper than going with a ball bearing turbo.

I just wanted to put my total up because it just seams like everyone says that this is a $500 set-up and I find that to be misleading especially if you are in my situation and don't already own an external wastegate.

If your patient and piece everything together it would have been cheaper, you just ended up buying the most expensive ewg o2 housing when you could have gone a much cheaper route..

Being patient was not an option, I couldn't stand driving the GSX with no turbo. Plus I have been dumping oil into it like crazy since even not boosting the 50 trim oil was finding it's way past the seals.

And I know I could have gone cheaper but I didn't want an external at all as California is hell for modified cars if the cops can see the changes so I wanted the MV-S as it is packaged pretty damn small. On my friends 1G it actually looks pretty stealth under the heat shield he made.

I'm finishing my last week of senior design right now. And the turbo and everything are actually sitting in my shop waiting to be put on the car after I finish my kinematics, and senior design project. Pics will come once it is all together.

The turbo had more shaft play than I was comfortable with. The compressor wheel was getting close to being able to hit the housing. A few of my friends have run Hholsets in the same condition but I just didn't feel good about it.

No one says holset turbo SETUPS cost $500 they say good turbos cost that much which is true. Of course if you switch the entire turbo setup it isn't going to cost you $500. You went out and got the most expensive stuff you could other than the turbo that's why it cost you so much. a ebay wastegate and o2 housing which have been proven to work would have saved you like $500 easy.

That's an interesting blog. I'm polishing two HX40 compressor housings tomorrow. We'll see how they come out. I'll post pix somewhere.
