I was wondering how many people take off the stock water/oil cooler from the filter housing? Has anyone noticed better overall tempatures without the water to oil cooler?

If you only wanted to get rid of the water cooler part on the filter housing, what would have to be done? Talking about a 6 bolt turbo oil filter housing and cooler.

When I researched I found one similar question, but the answers weren't really specific, and the OP had a 7 bolt instead of a 6 bolt, and there were also unanswered questions. Someone also posted the VFAQ whitch was only talking about the downsides of the factory water / oil cooler. http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/new...er-taken-off-do-i-need-whole-new-housing.html

Are air-to-oil coolers better for drag cars? Is it practical to use one with an oil thermostat setup on a daily driver?

Just get a foward facing ofh.:thumb:

For what year? Can you get a front facing OFH that you could add an air-to-oil cooler later, with an adapter, if needed?

Not sure if the front facing housing would get in the way of my intercooler piping, so I might just get a 1990 OFH if you can run one without an oil cooler.

I'd really just like to know if I can work with the 6 bolt OFH that I have now, since it's brand new and all I'm trying to do is delete the water-oil cooler. I understand I can add an air-to-oil cooler on my current filter housing with the purchase of a $40 adapter piece, (or peices?) I'm just still not sure if an air-cooler would be overkill at all for a daily driver

from my understanding, a new filter housing can run anywhere from 60-$100, so I would like to stay away from buying another housing unless it's really the best idea.

I eliminated mine with the swap to 6 bolt engine but i'm sure there' easier ways.. with enough things already heating my water i chose to built an air-to-oil cooler (or just used a trans cooler from a dodge truck that i welded -6 fittings on and mounted to my car and ran -6 hose from the 1g OFH and it's been great)

What???? Beaufort in the house?? Im near st george. Anyway i think i have a forward facing housing...maybe 7 bolt tho. Pm me.
The way i see it is that the oil is gonna get hot reguardless so any cooling wil help even the slightest bit. Your turbo is gonna be pretty much boiling that oil making it break down faster and decreasing its viscosity and protective purpose.

the 1990 only ofh housing was air to air. you can get bolts.( i believe 16'x1.50 pich..not 100% on that.) use them block the lines till you get the cooler and lines for for your set up. it.
not recomended for daily street use. but will work

I understand about the 90 only OFH having an air to oil cooler, but as I was saying, any new OFH would cost more than just deleteing the water cooling part, and buying the sandwich adapter to run a universal air to oil cooler.

I havent run one for a few years. i havent noticed any negative effects. I don't auto-x my cars though. If I did I would run one.

So what has to be done to remove the water cooler and still.use.the same.housing? ??

Take the "bolt" out that holds the cooler to the ofh. Cut the bolt to length and put it back into the ofh. Cap or weld the lines shut.

i recently removed my water oil cooler and am having trouble getting it to seal to the head, i didnt cross thread or anything but the oil filter doesnt want to seal.. i leaks alittle bit of oil, theres oil on the filter and arond the rim of it, drips alittle but not to hateful... help me out!

sometimes the stud that the oil filter screws on to comes loose, so you'd have to take a big 24-26mm deep well socket and re-tighten it, or atleast check it out. All I can think of unless it's not actually coming out the filter but droped on to the filter by something else close by (plenty of things, worth taking a really close look) it may even be worth it at some cases for leaks to buy liquid dye suitable for oils...good luck :thumb:
