How Hot Should A Turbo Get?

I have a 91 eclipse gsx, its completly stock. I just got it runing a few days ago, it had a broken drive plate. The other night I drove over to a friends house(around 10 miles) when I got there I left the car running and poped the hood and the exhaust manifold, turbo and O2 sensor housing were glowing bright red, I had not been driving it hard but a little fast. On the way home I drove very slowly, rarely getting the rpms above 2000, once I got home I poped the hood again and the turbo and part of the exhaust manifold were glowing again, not as bad before but stll more than I thought they should. This eclipse is my first experience with a turbocharged vehicle so I dot know much about turbos. Is this normal?

You're not alone, most people get the same reaction when they see it for the first time including me. My girlfriend thinks it's cool.

Thanks for the links. Sorry I didnt search but I wasnt sure what words to search for.

Anyways, the turbo doesnt matter now bcause I think I have rod knocking. I've had this car a little over 6 months and I have only got to drive it for 3 days, I think I need another job.
