How do you tell the differance between a 1g non turbo and 1g turbo ecu?

1g turbo ecu has what is called a knock board. The non turbo ecu's do not!

Check online or motoguys i think, or ship to ecmtuning they have a fast turn around. Good prices too.

Get in contact with "steve" on this site, im not sure if he still messes with ecu's but he used to.

Umm Steve used to..He's near chi town..But I don't think he does it anymore..I think he just does warranty work now..

Ecmtuning fixes ecu's but you would have to ship it to them..And if you need your car asap that wouldn't be an option for you..


So you said the ecu you have is not on the link I provided.Is it just that ecu or is it all n/t ecu's? I'll have to messege steve about updating his site if no n/ts are in the link..

Check for 4478 (without the A) in the link Bud posted instead and you'll quickly see that refers to a '90 turbo ECU from an AWD.

Here's a quote from Steve's site that should put all the other talk to rest:

Sure it is. MD145903 E2T34478 is a 4478 the "A" just says that it a non-EPROM.

The later ECUs used either "M" or "E" where "E" was a EPROM ECU.

I would send it to ecmtuning if your in no hurry i do remember steve saying he wasnt fixing them any longer i read that when i was looking to have my ecu converted to eprom.

I'm sure Steve will find his way back in here, but don't be so quick to call him out on something he's spent a huge amount of time on.

I have a 4478A here that is not EPROM. As you know by now, it is possible to convert these to EPROM so that may be what occurred with the 4478A you have. I don't have an explanation for the other one, though.

I like and trust steve alot. Im in no way tring to call him out just telling him that I have a factory eprom ecu not messed with thats a 4478a eprom and I have the 4478 that isnt eprom.

My 4478 is the non eprom, Makes my car run like crap and I took it to a electronics store and they say it doesnt have a burnt lead anywhere but they cant check much of it. But my eprom with leaky caps and some kinda black burn makes the car run great but always throws a maf code just like the non eprom. Super lost.

Do you know for sure that the cover of the ecu was not swapped? I have dealt with many, many DSM's and I have run acorss a few ECU's with swapped covers. What alerted me to this is when I bought a turbo '92 car. Pulled the ecu and the cover had a 'M' in the lower corner of the sticker. Pulled the cover to check out the caps and it was an eprom. Some people just don't know not to mess with everything.

I'd like to see your 4478A. Here's some examples of both a 4478 and 4478A. Based on all the other 90 ECUs I've seen over the years these two are representative of the others.

Note the EPROM marked E742 in the upper left of the 4478 EPROM ECU.

Lol Steve, Im not liein, ill try n get some pics but I do not have a camera. Its a stock mitsu board and it def says 4478a and I know what the eprom chip is. My normal 4478 is not eprom tho.

Not suggesting you were, just that out of hundreds of 90 ECU's I've seen I've never seen what your describing so I'd like to understand why. Perhaps they have been reworked in the past, and the connectors replaced or something else interesting.
