How do I tell if my exhaust manifold is 1g,2g,or evo III?

It was on the car when I bought it (92 GSX) and I don't know if its a stock 1g, 2g, or a Evo 3 exhaust manifold...how can I tell? Is there numbers on it? The outlet hole where the turbo bolts up is 2"...This car had some mods done to it when I got it like big 16g, boost controller, hacked air can, and more, but the guy I got it off of received the car on trade and didn't seem to know anything about it..I was going to go with a Evo III manifold but I don't know what I already have..help and thanks

Here is a pic if that helps..

That would be a 2g mani if my eyes do not deceive me :p

YHow much better would a ported Evo III or FP Race flow? Hmm what to do..

There isn't much porting to do on an Evo III exhaust manifold since they are already 7cm, other than maybe clean up the collector just a bit. A ported 2G EM will perform almost identically to a stock Evo III EM.

As for the FP Race, it's a good EM...but honestly I see very little (if any) difference between it and either of the other two you mentioned, especially with a 16g. Maybe a little quicker spool due to the much better collector design, but it's not a huge difference at low to moderate airflow setups.

IMHO, there are MUCH better places to put your hard-earned cash for performance gains. Clean up and port your 2G EM, and move on to bigger and better things. ;)

Actually Craig, a ported 2G manifold is an Evo III manifold as long as the collector is opened up to the same spec as the Evo III. The two manifolds are identical except the 2G unit has a 6cm collector (designed for the T25) while the Evo III has a 7cm collector (designed for the Evo III).

As the photo by Pursuit shows, here are the unported collectors of each:

I do believe the Evo III manifold has higher nickel to resist cracking much like the Evo III turbine housings do. In all of my years of rebuilding turbos, I've never seen an Evo III turbine housing that cracked....although they do like to eat bolt threads.

Hmmm...The only thing I have ever ported was the inside of a stock DOHC NYG ACR Neon intake manifold and it was NOT fun...and that was aluminum..I have seen Evo III's selling for $60 used..but I bet if I dropped the $275 for the FP piece I could use it as long as I wanted to and if I keep it in good shape I can probably sell it if I ever wanted to for a couple hundred..so it would be like paying $75 to use the FP manifold as long as I need to..does this make any sense??? ha

Just run the 2G as it is until FP has another sale on the race manifold then. You have about 26348712378213 better places to put $275 at this point, rather than worrying about a different EM... unless yours is cracked.

Just my .02 of course. :)

Your right...I think I will do just that..so when they have this sale how much does the FP manifold usually go for?..

They had them a few months back for around $200.

I really wouldn't worry about a manifold at all in your case, at least until you get to the choke point of your turbo. On a 16g you won't see any measurable EM gains until you get a good tuning system and know how to use it. Any small gains you could potentially see will be offset by the inability to accurately control your timing and AFR....so focus on that first.

EDIT:

$175 on Memorial day.
