I've got a single piston caliper that I'm trying to rebuild. I have the piston and the seal out, but I can't figure out how to get the boot out, and it's all torn up. In my repair manual it also shows what they call the caliper piston ring, and that seems to be on the inside of the cylinder holding down the boot, but it won't budge. how do I get this boot out of there? thanks

There is a C-clip holding the boot down (it's in one of the grooves of the boot but not on the inside of the cylinder wall). You should just be able to pull on the boot hard and it should come off and then you'll have to pry the C-clip off of the caliper, if it doesn't come off with the boot (it goes around the cylinder). If the boot is torn up really badly I wouldn't worry about trying to take it off nicely seeing as you'll have to replace it anyway. Just don't harm the cylinder wall at all!!

There is a wire spring clip that holds the boot to the caliper body. You have to probe around until you find an end and then unwind it from the recess in the caliper body. I used a short 1/8" or so flat blade screwdriver to lift the end out and then work unwinding the spring loose.
