I recently got a 98 eclipse GSX and I saw other peoples eclipse with this nice clean engine, with other upgrades then i look at mine and half of my new used eclipse engine is full of rust. Now im thinkin how do i incorporate that into mine..........do I buy a new engine and where (cause I went to some sites and an entirely new engine cost the same as my car did plus it wasnt the right one so if I have to buy a new one where can I go) or is this all an illusion that its all just upgrades making it look like their engine is super clean? Help me out here.

First off, you must have spent nothing for your car then, because a new engines are not cheap. Sure you buy a block for 100 bucks and head for about the same, then you have internals that will cost you thousands. But if all your worried about is looks of your engine bay, and not the way it runs and if its reliable, keep you questions to the newbie section. Not to be rude man, but research parts, and youll realize how much it is to just replace and engine and labor for you to have someone to out it in.

you can get JDM ( japanese domestic market) engines for a great price at unitex trading co out of texas.. i got mine there for a little over 600 with a year warranty no matter what amount of abuse ( but i worked in used auto parts sales at the time, so i probably got a couple hundred off the retail price )

here's their web addy

this will be a stock engine though, so making it look "clean" is all on you and your wallet to buy dress up stuff.. no one makes "designer engines" :LOL

If your engine is in good healthy shape (via compression and leakdown test) you could just spend a bit of time cleaning your engine bay. Take a couple of rags, a bottle of simple green, and about an hour or two of time and you will have a clean engine bay like everyone elses too.

As far as getting a "new" motor, I don't even think dealerships are offering that anymore. If they did, it would be over $3000 anyway. Most people purchase or use their existing long blocks and have them rebuilt. Once you have the engine out of the car, a good brush/soap will clean it up as much as you'd like.

god, how did i not even notice that he's only worried about appearance,..... do what blackspooln said and clean it , then buy dress up parts that are shiny.. and remember chrome don't get you home :LOL

turboglenn, very helpful but please use proper punctuation and capitalization in tech sections.

Well, like you said, a lot of the good looks is an upgrade, believe it or not. You can order trim for the engine to make it look nice, or you can clean it. I'd start with the cheaper one, cause you're gonna have to do it anyways. Then get the trim, and start getting solid piping to replace that rubber and plastic bulls**t, and just take good care of it.

And just to make it really clear, buying a new engine for looks only is a BAD idea. you will waste a lot of money, time, and effort that you could of spent making the ENTIRE car nicer.

Thanks and i didnt worry about the profomance because i alresdy had a list that lead up to at least 40 grand so that didnt worry me as far as getting a new engine block that would take me at least 3 months to cough up that kind of dough!

Whoa! 40 grand? You must want to to put wings on it and fly:rolleyes:
Anyways the easiest way to clean up your engine and imo the cheapest is to:

Degrease the hell out of it.
Take off little odds and ends to paint, biggest differences would be big parts like valve cover, heat shield and colored wires .
WD-40 and a rag to wipe down all rubber(keeps it healthy too).

Im sure you can buy chrome items on ebay. But it all depends how much your willing to spend. Most Performance parts nowadays are easy on the eyes anyways IE: intake pipes,BOV's, MBC's, IC pipes.

You can buy my car for 30 grand, it comes with a pretty new engine :D I'll even give you the mods on it for free.

hahahahaha wats the point of being in da game if everything is handed down to u on a silver platter:toobad:
sike nahh but thanx for da offer!

If you have a lot of rust, take of those pieces and get them sandblasted and repaint them. I know one thing that always rusts is the metal holder for the brake fluid resurvoir. Just unbolt, blast, prime, and paint. DO NOT sand blast the valve cover though!!!!!!!!! If you don't know why, just do a search and you'll find that that can be very hazardous to your engine, and more specifically your oil pump.

No, its not an illusion. Bolt-on modifactions, a little Simple Green, and a lot of elbow grease will do wonders for how your motor looks. Take mine for instance.. ;)

That said, buying an engine for your car just because your old one looks bad/dirty is probably a bad idea and definitely a waste of money. What I suggest is to do a compression test to diagnose the internal condition of your engine because that is really the important thing.

If it turns out that your motor really is old and worn, you have a couple good options for a replacement...

1) Rebuild the old motor yourself.

2) Buy a completely rebuilt motor from Slow Boy Racing, Road/Race Engineering, etc.

3) Buy a nice low-mileage JDM 4g63
