Yes, a "hooting" sound. That's the best way I can describe it. :) Kind of a "hoooooooooooooooooo" type sound. Not super loud, but you notice it. I didn't notice it before, but I just had a bunch of work done on my car and had a 2.5 downpipe, high flow cat, and exhaust put in. I'm wondering if it is because of the downpipe, so it is flowing better and now I hear it more (not sure though). The sound only happens when I push on the gas and the boost gauge climbs or when I let go of the gas after being in boost. It sounds like it is coming from the front of the car, but my girlfriend said it sounded like it was coming more from the rear (she was in the passenger seat). It could just be reverberating and sounding like it is coming from the rear to her though.

I did a search, but couldn't find anything specific. I'm guessing it is the sound of the turbo spooling and I've just never heard it before. This is my first turbo car, so new sounds scare me. :p But, I thought I'd ask just to make sure.

I'd pull the intake off and check for shaft play. My turbo made a similar noise on the way to work the other day. The supra guys refer to it as the turbo death whine. I had a good bit of shaft play in my turbo and the noise was from the turbo's compressor blades touching down on the compressor housing.

Sounds like compressor surge, check your bov return line, the vacuum line from intake manifold to the BOV and obviously the BOV itself. If you're tapping the BOV line for your mbc, change it to the j-pipe and leave the BOV line alone. Good luck.

I actually don't have the mbc in yet, so I don't think it could be that. ;) I need to update my profile, it was going to be put in last weekend, but things changed so it's going in later. I'll check those lines though and make sure they are cool. I really really hope it is not the turbo going out on me.

Don't forget to check the turbo for shaft play like Kyle suggested.

Yeah, I will. Might have to wait till I can check it in the day though so I have light. When I get home from work it is dark.

How loud is the "turbo death whine" sound going to be? This sound is very faint. You can barely hear it over the exhaust. Is the "death whine" really loud? Is it really high pitched? The sound I'm hearing is not a high pitched sound.

Is it before you are in boost, or as your vacuum is raising? Mine used to do it when the vacuum started to raise before I hit boost. I always thought of it as a boost leak, cause after I got my front mount with all my aluminum pipes it stopped. Just a thought.

I have an MBC. It's right here, sitting on my desk. ;) Got it from SBR. I just haven't installed it yet. I was going to last weekend, but the car had a coolant leak that I had to get fixed and I was getting the clutch and springs installed. Some of the mods on the car, like the SAFC-II, were already on the car when I bought it.

I took a look at the car tonight. It looked like all the hoses were in and tight, but it was hard to see cause it was dark (even with my flashlight). I did notice the air filter wasn't clamped down, so I fixed that. I doubt that was it though. I won't be able to drive the car till tomorrow. I'm guessing that perhaps something came loose when we were fixing the coolant leak. We had to replace the two radiator hoses and I remember one of the hoses coming from the turbo getting pushed out of the way. Perhaps it came lose. I'll have to build that little pressure testing thing and give it a test. Maybe that will be my weekend project.
