Has anybody done this with their DSM.. and have any knowledge on how to do this?

I have a 95 GSX with the stock infinity sound system.. PERSONALLY.. im already satisfied with the sound, except it lacks bass.. i didnt buy my car to pimp out with a phat sound system, though i wouldnt mind having more bass.. my intentions are set so the option of buying a whole new head unit is not a choice..

what i heard so far is u get ur sub and amp and u hook it up somewhere LOL.. what i enjoy about the stock head unit is that it has an adjustable equalizer.. and it has an auxilary input RIGHT IN THE FRONT.. so i can hook up an ipod.. soon as i get bass.. its a cheap solution for a what i think is a good enough system..

hope somebody can help me.. thanks

I did this about 4 years ago when I first got the car. Honestly, its not really worth the effort. There is a din cable going to the stock amp under your pass seat. I had to find the right wires and tap from the input wires and splice them into wires that went to my other amp. It worked fine, but was alot of work. I would suggest getting a new head unit, but if you are determined to do it it can be done. Floating out there somewhere is a diagram that shows what each wire inside the din cable is. Its been so many years I cant remember where i got that, but maybe somebody here can find it.

I did it to my Eclipse and it was a piece of cake. I ran a 300 watt amp with 12' sub with no problems. Basically there are two things you can do:

1. Get an amp with speaker level inputs. If you install the amp in the trunk then you can just splice into the speaker wires going into your rear 6x9s instead of having to mess around with the wiring going into the stock amp and head unit.

2. Get a regular amp and buy this convertor thing that lets your use RCA connectors. This is what I did. I forgot what the converter was called but I got mine at Radio Shack and basically what it did was you take the wires from you speaker and connect it to the convertor. Then you use RCA cables to connect the convertor to the amp.

just use line output converter splice into you 6x9's and connect your amp rca jacks then find a remote turn on lead for your amp to turn on when you turn the key. any ignition wire will do. pull of the door sill plate and there will be a cluster of wires use a tester to find one.

Its not that easy doing it that way. He has premium sound so the resistance might be different that the converter was made for. It could damage it. Check out sound domain I believe they sell the premium audio converters there.

Try here. http://www.davidnavone.com/adaptor_products.htm A really good car audio messageboard highly praises his products. Some converters near the bottom say they will work with all OEM systems (including Bose so premium is included). I suggest getting one with a variable output voltage, as most amps can be damaged with too much input voltage. One product description says some systems might have upto 9.5 volts, and that is more than most amps I know can handle (mine are up to four volts, Planet Audio).

If you are just looking to add moderate bass, look into an Infinity Basslink. It is a 10 in sub, with a 200 watt rms amp. You can just hook it up by splicing in to your rear speakers (you can still use your speakers, you just need to splice into the wire). You will also need to run an 8 gauge wire from your battery and ground but you won't need a remote turn on. They are fairly cheap on ebay, has plenty of bass for a hatchback. Compliments the stock system perfectly. I had one in my talon for awhile until i redid my whole system.

thanks for all the replies and info guys.. it was all sufficient.. enough to make me confident about doing it myself.. going to try and get this done this weekend..

i did a search on here and there was no other topics about it..

thanks again :thumb:

I just installed a 10" sub in a sealed box along with an amp a couple weekends ago, feel free to PM me if you get stuck and have any questions. I spliced the amp into the rear speakers with an RCA converter as mentioned above. The biggest problem I ran into was figuring out where to poke the 4 gauge power cable through the firewall, I ended up running it through the steering column boot. I also broke a zillion freakin rivets, they're really brittle so be careful. I ended up removing all the smaller ones above the rear 6x9's and velcroing the panels back down to keep them from rattling. The whole setup turned out great though.

HEre are the brass tacks...

1) basslink, corner load it in the right hand corner at 45 degrees to the "pocket".
1 8ga power wire and a little length of ground and some crimp caps or barrels. you are done and it will improve your factory system tremendously... but please turn the eq bass down before setting the gain and leave the bass boost way way down on it. I had one and it was excellent. If you get one with the adj bass knob that knob will fit nicely in the ashtray (which is useless unless you are a smoker with arms 4 inches too short to reach the wheel and the windows are up with the fan off)

2 separate amp and subs... use an output converter (adj from DEI is around $12 and works very nicely) connected to the rear 6x9s for signal... the appropriate ga wire for the amp run thru the main harness boot under the battery tray and down the right side. Turn on lead can be found in the wiring harness for the factory amp I beleive or if not the cigarette lighter is accessory only and definately can handle the extra load of a remote turn on.

in any case it depends on 3 factors... $ and amount of bass and how much room and time you want the install to take up.

If you have any questions feel free to PM me... and i'll walk you thru what ever step by step if i have to.

What did you use for the remote wire?

Try not to bump threads that are over a decade old, especially when the person you are quoting hasn't been seen since 2007. Just a friendly heads up :thumb:.

To answer your question, you can use any 12v power source that is triggered with the ignition. What I would do, is tap into the factory trigger or use cig lighter; or you could always toggle switch it but risk killing the battery if you forget to kill the power to the amp when you turn the car off.
