hooking laptop up to car

Just so I know how when i get my car back, how do I wire this thing, Chuck? , there are only three wires coming off of the motherboard I'm pretty sure so what did you wire them to? Remember that I'm using this DVD player only and no headunit.

Chuck I was wondering the same thing as Boosted. I assume that you have a special power supply that you are using, I have even read about a few of them. However I was wondering how did you splice it into your car in order to power it? Also I assume that you do not have both a car PC and a head unit, so you play all of your music on your pc. Well how did you manage the connections? I mean how did you get the factory wiring harness for the radio to fit for the PC so that the cd's you play would broadcast through your car speakers? Sorry for all of the questions, I am actually in the process of building a car pc of my own, however I have no been able to figure out these things and since your the local "expert" i figured id ask you. Course my main problem is a place to mount my TV in my 1G.... not much room in the center gauges/controls to mount it.. that motorized thing is very nice but seems like a waste. I mean why get 2 dvd players? Now if they had just the TV that folded like that and fit in a din slot.. I would be in heaven! Thanks a lot man.

The 3 wires are red, black and blue. Power, Ground and Accessory. To splice it in, i just took the connector on the back of the stock headunit and spliced the power ground and accessory wires. Currently i have my stock headunit in the car to listen to radio and also to use as an input for hte carpc audio. i am running everything from the audio out of the pc through a tapedeck adaptor. I have a fm modulator but am not sure if i will use it yet, basically the fm modulator will plug into the radio and wirelessly broadcast the signal from the carpc. To get sound you need either a fm modulator and radio, tap adaptor and radio, or a radio with an auxillary input. i will try to find other ways to get the audio in but thats all i can think of for now

I am planing to do that with a mouse. If I need to write i will use the keyboard on screen (even thought it is going to be hard to see!).
I want to be able to:
Read obd2 codes
PLay DVD, MP3,CD
Radio.
If i can, PLAY" need for speed Underground"!!!!

i figured out a way to get around the headunit problem. If you use and amp, you can plug your audio out form the pc to the amp and that will go to the speakers without a headunit

btw two more questions. One which software do you prefer to run with your Car PC? I mean like the OS and what not. Isnt there a special one for car pc's? and what power supply/hookup are you using to run it? Also would you recommend a particular motorized foldable tv/monitor for the hookup? It just seems pointless to have 2 dvd players but I definetly need the foldable option.

hands down use MediaCar for the software. Im using XP as the OS and then running MediaCar on startup. http://www.media-car.fr.st/

that is the interface used to run videos, dvds, mp3s, usb radio if you have it setup, navigation if setup and anything else.

im using the lilliput touchscreen monitor, and my own custom skin i made.

im using hte opus 90w power supply that regulates power and starts when the car is on and shutsdown after the car is off (similar to a turbo timer)

Cool Chuck. Any suggestions on mounting that COOL ASS touch screen in a 1G? I saw how you had it mounted in your 2G, but the 1Gs dont have that extra center area so that posses as a problem. I definelty want it mounted somehwere center though and not on the passanger side or anything.

i took the stock piece out of the car and molded the screen directly in. Im sure you could figure out some way of doing the same thing with the 1g (like in the upper center vents). Also, i have talked to someone online and they have been working on a program that will control things such as air conditioning, locks, windows, lights and basically anything else so eventually its possable to get rid of all controls in the car and have just a screen. Id look into molding the screen into the vents tho

Also what did u use to get rid of the AC/Heat connetions that go into the center vents to keep you from melting your touch screen? i took the screen apart and molded the back half of the screen shell to the plastic ac vents with fiberglass and bondo. i still have the heat connections like they were, but i plan on blocking them off with duct tape or something soon. Right now, i have no need for a keyboard at all, but if i decided to get a gps software or datalogging aka OBD scanner i may put one in incase i need it

Cool. Did you actually cut into the vent area? so you could stick the screen in there? Or did you just bondo the fiberglass to the vents and then just stick your screen on the fiberglass? I can handle all the other parts, this is the only thing I have no idea about doing.. so I really appreciate it. is it possible to use any 5.1 sound cards with these car pc's?
how about one of those wireless -g cards so you could swap files from the home pc when you were at home, or download songs when you were near a starbucks or something?

To whomever was asking about the screen w/o a Dvd player, Alpine has the CVA 1004 that has no CD or DVD etc etc, sony has one that is radio and monitor only and folds out from the bottom rather than the top.

I think the Alpine unit was under 800 at Circus circus, Sonys probably about the same at Bust Buy

This Car pc idea is really quite neat. You could run your DSMlink have radio and DVD.

Thx a lot Attack. It was me who was asking about the screen. That is just so much more convienent. Course a touch screen flip monitor would just be incredible. I dont suppose you know of any of these?

As for the wireless card, as long as there is another PCI slot on the board then you could do it with no problem. As for you downloading stuff sitting in front of your house, you would need either a VERY GOOD wireless access point, or you would need an amplifier for it. Most access points dont even work throught an entire moderately sized house. Let alone outside it. If you wanted to get one to do this, the only one I would recommend in the Linksys WRT54G.

As for the surround, im not sure but I think chuck said in one of his other posts that it had that.

They do make them without DVD players. It's just a tv with A/V input. They're much cheaper than the ones with the DVD player built in too.

alot of people with systems in their car use usb sound cards. i have my sound coming off the motherboard and it works awesome on my stock speakers, but if you have an amp, you can use a usb card and plug it directly into the amp.

its possable to use usb to get wireless access also. After i get the usb connector to get access, i can set it up to get access from the router in my house and when im parked in the garage, i can transfer files.

Thanks a lot for the pics chuck. Is the motherboard not sufficent to provide sound to an aftermarket system? I mean good sound.. just becuase I plan to utilize the USB port for something else.. so I may have to check out a different motherboard that either has better sound, or more likely has an internal port I can run an internal sound card too..

i think the sound is excellent but lots of people have to have the best of everything and use usb soundcards for whatever reason. I wont get a usb soundcard casue there is nothing wrong with the audio the way it is
