hole in BEP holset housing?

So I just recieved my HX35 wastegagte on O2 BEP housing from extremepsi. Looks like a very solid peice and was packaged very well. However, when inspecting I noticed a large hole (machined) on the outside of where the flapper hole is. When looking at pictures of other housings this hole appears to be plugged up. So my question is what is this hole for? And how do I go about closing it up? Did I recieve the wrong BEP housing?

Any input would be appreciated.

Yes exactly. Does this need to be welded shut? I was under the impression that this housing was bolt on ready
 
It's for a wastegate flapper arm- your housing must be older stock unless they decided to start drilling these again as they did quit drilling them on all new castings to my knowledge. You can either find a solid plug to pound in there tight, or it will need to be welded shut.

This is the way ALL Bullseye .55 housings came at one point.
 
I am going to contact extreme tomorrow and see if they will exchange it out for the newer casting. If not I guess I will have it welded up. Is this made out of SS? Does anyone know a good welder in the Boston/ central Mass area?

Even wastegate on o2 should of had that hole welded shut.

Not all vendors provide that option. Yes, for those who plan to run a wastegate off the manifold that hole should be welded shut. But for those running a wastegate off the O2 housing you want to keep that hole open, even enlarge it if possible.

However, unless you plan to use an internal wastegate, the flapper arm hole should be sealed up. Keep in mind how much heat and pressure that area will experience. Most machine and welding shops could properly plug/weld it shut for cheap ($25-30 around here). But it wouldn't hurt to ask if they're willing to send you a new housing.

It's definitely strange your housing came with that port drilled. Like Justin said, the housing don't typically come like that anymore. I received my BEP bolt-on housing last month and it doesn't have that hole.

That is a super old housing im surprised anyone had them in stock any more. We sell BEP housings like they go out of style, Strictly Import Motorsports - Import Performance Parts and Services They used to make these housings way back in the day but are no longer available. Everyone else is right either weld it shut or see if you can exchange it out :) ... GL

Sure, I don't see why that wouldn't work if done properly. Quite a few members including myself block the EGT port that way. Do you have a set of calipers to measure the ID of the hole?

Egt sensor in there?

You'd only get exhaust flow over the sensor when the wastegate opens. So it wouldn't be constantly accurate.
 
that "hole" should be plugged...

I would call Dave and have him ship you the stuff to plug it.

Well I tapped it at work today. Went real easy, which means I probably screwed it up haha. I used some silkolene 762 which is apparently used on turbochargers so I'm hoping everything works out and there isn't an exaust leak
 
When I ordered my BEP housing from ExtremePSI they asked me if I wanted that hole welded shut or not. This was 2 years ago though.
 
I don't have any pictures yet maybe I will snap some tomorrow at work. As for the sealant, this material is supposed to have a working temperature up to 800ºC which is just under 1500F. Its basically sodium silicate which is not a silicone persay but does inlcude the element silicon like silicone. This matieral will harden when in contact with air and does not have a remelting point till > 800ºC. So as long as I don't drop the turbo or have some ridiculous vibrations in the turbine housing I think I should be good.
