Did few runs just to log and see condition of the engine and was thinking if maybe getting new cams due to lack of high RPM pull.

I got this good deal on HKS Camshafts 272's for intake and exhaust and was thinking of grabbing em. Do you guys think I could be an overkill for my setup and maybe I should go with something lower and should I get adjustable cam gears for it too? Any other brands you might recommend or HKS will do the job fine?

I appreciate your suggestions

I personally dont think anything is overkill as far as mechanical items. You can always upgrade your turbo later on and the cams will already be there.

Now if you didnt plan to and had 1600 cc injectors......well then yes.....bit overkilled hahaha

Yes, it will be over-kill. 264s will give you a nice gain in top-end performance, but will also run smoother at idle than the 272s.

If you're stuck on getting 272s, or what to opt for a 264/272 setup, take a look at FFWD Connection's product line of camshafts:

Here is a 264 combo offer:

A recent thread on cams (keep in mind what what said in post #16):

Full 272's would be alittle overkill for what you have now. If you want to upgrade your turbo later than it would be better to get the good deal on the 272's. If that is all the further you want to go than I would go with a 264/272 combo. I would also say yes to the adjustable cam gears so you don't have to remove the timing belt twice.

I know of several people running 272s with 14bs and making great power...

I say don't even hesitate, go for the 272s. If you buy 264s, next year you'll be tuning your car and thinking "man if i had 272s, id have a little more airflow and power than this" and you'll end up selling the 264s and buying 272s. So just get them now.

THx for the feedback guys, but if I go with 272 wouldn’t I have an idle problem even though I think I can compensate for it with DSM Link with higher idle setting.

And don’t I have to change my valve springs and valve spring retainers($$$$$$$) or it’s just “plug and play”?

Also with a 264/272 combo which one is exhaust and which one is intake. Personally I wouldn’t be updating to anything more then I currently have, I’ll just tune it really well for the goal I want (~380WHP) and leave it till I get my 350Z and TT it or wait till EVOs become Legal in Canada in year 2030 (I can dream can’t I?)

And my last question… what modification do I have to do for cam angle sensor? Sorry to ask all these questions but I never installed cams before so I learn on the go and on these forums :)

264 is the intake cam and 272 is the exhaust cam. You can have a decent idle with 272's. If that is all the more you are going to want to do with the car than I would recommend the 264/272 combo. The EVOIII16G isn't going to be the greatest top end performer and the full 272's would be sacrificing too much low and mid-range for the top end gain with that setup imo. You'll also be happy to hear that you don't need to swap springs and retainers to use any of these combinations of cams. Whichever combo you go with you'll definately feel the difference. Good luck and good tuning.

You will need to drill the intake cam if it wasn't already done so for a 2g cas. And since you have dsmlink, just switch to a 1g cas and you won't need to drill anything. I actually have a set of 272s i got 2 weeks ago i am itching to put in but i hate messing with timing stuff so until my buddy finds free time, i just have to keep staring at them.
