I just installed 272's in my car a couple of hours ago, I tried turning the motor over with the timing belt off, and it was fine, I put the belt on and now it wont turn over. its almost looks like the springs are going to bottom out. the head had a low spot and the machine shop had to take .004 off of it to get it out, but i dont think the valves are hitting the pistons. I was under the impression that the 272's were a bolt on affair. am i wrong? different lash adjusters maybe? HELP PLEASE

Donnie

What do you mean you turned the motor over without the belt on? Did you realign the timing marks and was this before the cams were bolted down meaning all the valves would have been closed? Can you turn the crank either way? Cams are a bolt on affair and shouldn't be a problem at all...

yeah i had moved the crank because of installing new copper wire in my oring grooves. we timed it up on tdc before we put the belt on. now that we have the belt on it will roll over but not all the way. i hope im explaining this good enough

 So, you CRANKED the motor over WITHOUT the timing belt installed? Thats going to be a LOT of  <<<---this kind of stuff for you. What you're EXPLAINING is your valves being bent, not closing and moving out of the way for the piston travel. I hope thats what you mean by the motor not ROLLING all the way over. :(

Ok so you turned it over without the timing belt... was the cams bolted on when you did this?? If so then you hit some valves. The only time you can crank the motor w/o the t-belt and with the head on is when the cams are off. That way all of the valves are closed. Once you pop in the cams, regardless of position, there will be some valves that are partially open.

the head was on, but the valves were closed. i took the belt off this evening and turned the crank so the pistons were far enough down so the valves wouldnt hit. turned the cams over by hand a few times and they loosened up. i guess they just needed a little help. thanks for all the input guys. i appreciate it.
