Hey guys, this has been a small nuisance but when i put my car in to any gear i hear a small faint hissing noise but when i press against, for example, 3rd gear the hissing noise goes away....any thoughts?

My thoughts also. TOB. While its running, listen under the hood in the transmision bellhousing area. A mechnics stethescope is a handy tool but you should be able to hear it if it is a TOB with your ears. A "swishy" or similar noise is what you would probably hear. The fact that when you touch the clutch it goes away is a good clue. If you determine it is the TOB, replace it with an OEM unit and "jesus" clip.

Just to clarify, when the car is in gear and you are moving there is a hiss and if you apply pressure on the shifter towards the gear that is already selected it goes away? Or are you saying that while you have the clutch depressed and select a gear while standing still there is a hissing noise, and if you press the gear further into the selected position the sounds goes away? Because it sounds like it would be your Throw Out Bearing or maybe even possibly the Pressure Plate is dragging on the clutch and the clutch pedal needs to be adjusted.

Could this possibly be related to syncros....and if so maybe the trans is low on fluid. rofljerry, have you checked your trans fluid to see if it is full or if it has any fluid in it at all? Also check the color which might give you a indication on the shape of the internals? Syncro's will slow down rotationally when you are trying to select a gear. Its just a stab in the dark.

Like 1990TSIAWDTALON said, check/change your fluid and see if there is an improvement or change. Furthermore, the "hissing" that you are hearing while in gear must be pretty loud to hear over your engine and exhaust under load. If this sound gets any louder, unfortunately I'd start looking for another transmission or saving for a rebuild :(

could just be a vacumn leak? i cant think or anything in a manual tranny that will hiss. grinding or metal sounds yes but not a hiss.
