Highest hp/tq made on a 4g64 sohc

Seeing as though that car isn't meant to be boosted and has nearly no aftermarket support without the dohc setup I say that's pretty good. So your "obvious point" is pretty moot.



You could always get the other manifold as it would be easier to work with although its still hella expensive and unproven on this platform (as nobody tried it). In any case if you do wish to make your own the first non twin throttle body seems to just have the plenum chopped off and replaced with a new 100mm plenum. The runners on the other hand are slightly lengthen with aluminum spun inside. For the second one here's some up close pictures you can use to create it:

Both methods assume you have some sort of skills welding or know somebody who can. Regardless good luck to ya and if you do make one report back and post pics :).

Actually, I think you just supported what's obvious....let's see, gli sucks, not meant to be turbocharged, and the aftermarket sucks. Yeah, sounds like a GREAT project to invest in.... Seems pretty obvious to me. :hmm:
 
Perhaps but as you said not everybody post on this site, so for all we know somebody has or maybe signs up and has the answer to his question. The point though is that he wish to inquire more information not be told to "drop a turbo engine in" because that answer is totally counterproductive to the thread.

Especially seeing as though he already has a "turbo engine"(the gsx in his profile) not to mention he doesn't seem like a noob as he has over 700 post. So im pretty sure he knows if he wanted to make real power to stick with his gsx however once again thats not what he asked.

I figure if the op is willing to spend thousands of dollars on pointless bolt on's and not do anything to the internals or restrictive head than he is in the wrong direction. I don't agree with steering people in the complete wrong direction. If you are going for the well no one else has one and i spent a ton of money status than by all means go for it. But if you are just looking for results than the idea is stupid. There is no need to try and invent the wheel here.

The limit of the stock internals will be reached far before the limit of the intake manifold and throttle body, so upgrading all those parts without throwing in forged internals is completely pointless.

I see your looking for an argument, as your original remark was to criticize bradselph for criticizing someone who misstated a fact of 8psi is the max you can go without blowing things up. Everything after your stating now is pretty pointless to argue about...so moving on.

I actually did point out that the limit that the stock internals would be reached far before the limit of the stock intake manifold and throttle body. Throwing tons of money into an aftermarket intake and throttle body, and cam without upgrading the internals is a complete waste of time and money. The 4g64 uses a 52mm throttle body just like the 2g turbo engine which will handle 400+ horsepower, i don't see the stock internals handling anything close to that.
 
i make the amount of power i make on a tiny 14b with a 6cm housing. enough said
the 14b is maxed out at 3800 rpms and falls off from there.

This is a good read so far...either way I'm not saying I'm gunna dump a lot of money to max out the sohc head, I know the dohc swap is the best choice but that will come after the awd swap/turbo swap ,like stated before I'm just interesting in hp/tq people have gotten outta sohc motor when turboed.

It's really dependent on the turbo and sporting mods and not so much the engine. It will make similar numbers to a 4g63 but with more torque and less horsepower. The limiting factor is the internals. I wouldn't attempt to go much over 250-275 on the n/a pistons.
 
I use to have a 97 galant that basically has the same 4g64 like the eclipse spyder and i made 337hp/353tq 11.3 a/f 20 psi on pump gas and tha was my DD with a/c

Wow, i took a beating LOL. So, your telling me that this 4g64 is setup from the factory to handle up to 15psi(edit: ^^^^ It can take a bit more than that! Holy shit, nice galant bro) on stock everything?? I stand corrected....... Thats really amazing. I mean really, but you guys are proof so i cant argue it.
Also, no aftermarket forged rods/pistons exist for the 4g64? Thats another shocker.... I have to apologize, i assumed a few things. I was familiar with the 420a so i wasnt just pulling info out of my hat. I figured the NA to turbo swaps would be slightly similiar. In so much as you can only boost to about 8 psi on stock internals/HG/studs and that eventually you need upgraded internals.
I learn something new everyday on this site. Gotta love it

When i first got this car i researched a lot there's a ton of aftermarket support for this engine you just gotta find it a lot of it hides right in your face.

Pistons = EXTREME PSI : Your #1 Source for In Stock Performance Parts or EXTREME PSI : Your #1 Source for In Stock Performance Parts called and asked several people about the dohc head part they said it doesn't really matter just everyone always went with a dohc.
Rods = EXTREME PSI : Your #1 Source for In Stock Performance Parts stock rods are the exact same as a turbo 7 bolt.
Crank = EXTREME PSI : Your #1 Source for In Stock Performance Parts don't really know why you would want this but but there is a few.
now the head the valves are the same as the turbo head
springs are not confirmed to be the same yet but you can buy everything head related at RPW

Head bolts are the same so you can buy any arp studs you want for a 7 bolt.
 
Bradselph is right, I am running a fully forged 4G64 motor manley rods/pistons (minus the crank, waste of money for my power goal), I mentioned that earlier.

I "ripped you up" because you was posting half baked information like "stock internals can only handle up to 8psi" and add such and such without knowing factual information. Not to mention I'm well aware of all that he posted except for the information on the 4g64/4g63 pistons working with just the 4g64 sohc. I have never seen a confirmation from anybody stating there wouldn't be a valve to piston issue or any issues for that matter. Just wasnt sure if everything would run all hunky dory. Now if that all pans out to be true then I 'll re-quote my son :D:

Just to be sure we are all clear, this is on a spyder gs or 94-98 galant? Not doubting you or anything as I would love to use those pistons. Oh and any build pics of this beauty?

I run with this set up for like almost 2 years the only issue that i had it was the A/T tranny but after 5 months i did the swap to a OEM Galant S tranny that i found new 0 miles with 7 bolt Fidanza flywheel and ACT dics and pp until 1 day the car overheated bc a coolant hose broke and my friend didn't notice *&^%% but i did the same thing i replace the head gasket (2003 eclipse)and the last time i use 2003 eclipse oem piston a rods.... i use it for like a month then i sold it bc a move to FL

About the 8 psi thing for me that is a MYTH and it's like tuned a car on pump gas too that everybody has a different opinion about it. There is a lot of factors that influence on that when u r tuning like fuel curve, knock, timing etc. its like ostar eclipse that they make over 700hp at the wheels(and i saw it) with a 6 bolt stock block OEM PISTON AND RODS AND BOLTS and u know how many times i heard in the past THAT ANYBODY COULDN'T DO SOMETHING LIKE THAT. MYTH!!!! I use to work for kings performance and i saw a lot evos with a stock block making over 580 hp at the wheels with a stock block, Honda S2000 with a stock block making over 700 hp daily drivers and a couple more of N/A cars making good power in a stock form too.....
In my case i did it that way with my 4G64 Galant (20 PSI) when everybody was telling me by that time that i couldn't run no more than 6 psi in my set up (MYTH) it works for me and believe me a had a lot of fun especially after i did the M/T swap!!!!! And right now i have my third VR4 fully built and the last time that i tune it i made 505hp and 449 tq ON PUMP GAS 20 psi and that was 6 months ago.....

Just my personal opinion and O2 cents about that...........

There is a lot of HP you can get out of a stock internals 4g64 when you turbo it.. A few years ago i had a turbo 4g64, just make sure you have good fuel delivery, reflash or standalone ecu and you'll be surprised of the power you can squeeze out of that engine with the SOHC head........ By the way if anyone is interested i still have my custom Sheet metal Intake Manifold for the SOHC 4g64 for sale.... Which when you go turbo it really helps you squeeze a few HP..... e-mail @ [email protected] or PM

I made 300whp on a 7 bolt sohc 4g64 with a stock engine and a reground cam, It was in a mitsubishi L300 van and ran a IHI vf22 @ 20psi with no intercooler and water/meth injection. It was a daily driver and I couldnt kill it even after 1.5years of death.
 
sorry to revive an old thread, but it sounds like u guys dont realize that the 3Gs also use the 4g64, and there is actually quite a bit of aftermarket support for them. And to answer the OPs original question, aside from the head and TB the 4g64 actually has a rather strong bottom, just as strong if not stronger then the 4g63. Many members on Club3g.com(where im from hence the lack of posts) have proven that it's possible to safely push upto 20 psi on the stock block. most member on c3g run betweeen 12-16 psi and have absolutely not problems, example:
Voodoo's 2003 GS Turbo - Club3G Forum : Mitsubishi Eclipse 3G Forums
12.56 1/4mi adn 298whp at 15 psi

Cool story. The 3rd gen 4g64 is a different engine for the most part. It sits on the passenger side of the engine bay, the 2g engine sits on the driver side of the engine bay. Almost all bolt on's are going to be different. ALSO, you are very wrong to think that the 4g64 bottom end is as strong or stronger than a 4g63 bottom end stock for stock. Stick around here for a while and read some threads and you will learn than there are people making double the power that you listed on bone stock 4g63 bottom ends. There are plenty of people in the 11's, 10's, and some in the 9's on stock bottom ends.

The block is very similar, but won't come close to kissing a DSM bell housing. So if the 3G is capable of sharing any parts with a 4g63, it's with the Evo 4g63.

You can use the block for a 2.4l build in an evo.


Also the stock bottom end is good for about 400hp max if you know what your doing. No more or its guarunteed to break.

You have to understand that there is a big torque difference in a 400hp 2.0 and a 400 hp 2.4 which is what is a big limiting factor in the max a stock 2.4 bottom end will take.
 
I hate to bring up an old thread here. I made 198 WHP at 7.5 PSI on my stock SOHC 4g64 with a small 16g. Being that i have a distributor system and CANT control timing with my water/meth and all that snazzy shit, im VERY limited to power output. Im about to transition to coils from distributor from the spyder and install a 2g ecu and POSSIBLY run Speed Density.. I may also have the cam ground as well. Not sure. I really want to see my car make over 300 and i really think its possible. Here is my mod list.

-ported and polished head
-port matched intake manifold
-3'' exhaust
-60mm throttle body
-small 16g turbo with ported exhaust housing
-tubular O2 housing
-190 LPH fuel pump rewired

People in here should do their research before they talk about the stock bottom end of an engine, for the record the rods of a 4G64 engine are the same as the ones on a 7 bolt 4G63 turbo engine which means that they've been proven to hold 500+ whp without issues. Also you can swap the internals of any 7 bolt engine which means that you can put 3g 4G64 internals in a 2g 4G64 engine and the same applies to evo's and turbo 2g's.
