Hello everyone. I have a 1997 eclipse gsx with a 16g evo 3 greddy fmic, walbro 255 fuel pump. Intake manifold. Tuned with dsmlink. I bought it not too long ago and it cuts out only at high rpm when boost is about to hit and only when the engine is at operating temperature. Noticed a white cloud of smoke when I got up around 5000 Rpms. Possible headgasket? New valve cover gasket, NGk plugs and wires too

As for the cutting out, What size injectors, how many pounds of boost are you running, and do you have a wideband? White smoke is usually coolant related, is your car overheating at all?

Not overheating according to dummy guage, stock injectors. I just can't figure out why it runs good cold but as soon as it gets to operating temp, forget getting on it.

Do you habe a fuel pressure regulator? Could be fuel cut or the wally 255 overflowing the stock regulator. Have you verified you actually have DSM link installed?

Roberti, the kid gave me the cable for dsm link and said a tune shop tuned it. I'm still new to the dsm world and don't know much about tuning and also stock fuel pressure regulator and no boost controller. Was under the impression you didn't need that stuff with dsm link. And tametalon92 that's what I was thinking but wasn't sure just wanting some second opinions before I go tear the head off

Sounds like fuel cut. If this was tuned by a shop... it also sounds like the previous owner might have kept the injectors (at the least) and afpr before the sale

Its a possibility, but I really don't know. I downloaded ecm link on my laptop. I also order a leak tester and compression tester. I guess ill wait until they get here and go from there, but from what everyone is telling me I should go with 550cc injectors and some sort of afpr.

With link you can go with bigger injectors and tune around it. With 550's thats all they will flow. Spend your money wisely. Nothing wrong with 550's but they are not much bigger than stock.

I posted a thread a few days ago about my car cutting out at high Rpms and the CEL coming on when it does. It almost just stutters when boost is about to hit. I'm reposting because I noticed a few other things. The valve cover gets in my opinion too hot. You can barely touch it. Also the stock fuel pressure regulator has no vacuum lines to it and is unplugged, the kid did say something about a vacuum delete, but why is that necessary. My car is a 97 gsx, mods are 16g evo3, greddy fmic, bigger intake manifold, walbro 255 fuel pump. Shep trans and transfer case act 2600 clutch. The clutch seems to squeal at idle until you push the pedal in. Possible throwout bearing? I'm thinking of installing a maf translator, bigger injectors and and afpr and possibly a boost controller. I also have a dsm link cable and the car is supposed to have it installed. I downloaded ECM link on my laptop I'm going to play with it tonight. Just looking for any advice on anything I've mentioned, I know my way around a vehicle but I'm new to the dsm world.

Forgot to mention tried scanning it with scan tool and it wouldn't communicate with the ecu but the scanner communicates with my other cars. (Not dsms)

Usually need a FPR with a 255 pump and squeal until you touch the clutch, very possible TOB. Go OEM on that for sure.

thanks for the help 1990talon but I downloaded ecmlink on my laptop and plugged the cord in...still no connection. I'm lost at this point and quite frankly tired of dealing of this. Does anyone even know where to begin when you cant communicate with your ecu?

Could you have a bad cord? I know I have read on here that some guys have run into that and just needed to get a new cable and then the program would talk to the ECU. My laptop is particular about which usb port I use, have you tried a different port also? Just putting that out there to try and diagnose the problem.

well the thing is it wouldn't connect to my code scanner either. TThe scanner lit up when plugged to the obd2 though so I know it has power but I installed ecmlink right from the internet for free so im not entirely sure the cable is even right for the version though. I thought dsmlink was just one program with one cable before I bought the car..now I have no idea

Do you have ecmlink eprom installed in your ecu?

It's not just a cable and software, the "meat" of ecmlink is the eprom chip.

See I didn't know that I'll look at the ecu tonight. I was told a tune shop tuned it with dsmlink so hopefully it is. If not will a 97 ecu need socketed for it?

If you don't have the chip inside period that could be the issue... I'd start by taking the computer out, opening it up and seeing if it's eprom or has a chip if it socketed, it's very easy to tell if it has a chip installed or not. As far as the stuttering it could very we be plugs or plug wires, I had that happen to me a few times and ended up being plugs gapped incorrectly at first and then my wires went bad shortly after and had the same "stutter" issue. I would definitely get to checking inside the ecu though first and run a model number check to see if it's correct for the car and year atleast able to be used in your car.

that's what im going to start with. I know there have been threads before about how to do this, so ill do a little research. As for the plugs and wires I checked the gaps they were good but I bought new ngk iridium plugs and ngk wires, haven't thrown them on yet though because I wanted to wait until I tried a few other things. Didn't really thing plugs and wires would only make it act up under high rpms whens its boosting... but ive seen stranger things happen

**UPDATE
I pulled the plastic cover off and pulled the ecu out. According to the sticker (MD312464) its a 95 ecu. My car is a 98. Also it has the E in the bottom right corner for E-prom. I unfortunantly did not have time to go further to open it up, but my question is would a ob2 code scanner work on a 95 ecu? that could be part of my problem as I would really like to scan the car but cant get it to communicate.

I am not sure if they were switched to obd2 or not in 1995, I know that is the main year some cars started to offer obd2, gm switched over to obd2 in 96, irrelevant to Diamond Star Motors, just saying they probably weren't obd2 yet if GM wasn't until 96. I would definitely look for the DSMlink chip, that would be the fastest thing besides going ahead and swapping plugs and wires. Believe it or not plugs and wires acting up or that are bad can cause plenty of hesitation or stuttering in upper rpms, it's happened to me on two separate occasions, one time being plugs and the next the wires only went bad. Hopefully you have the chip installed, that would make life easier so you could monitor what's going on.

I have a boost gauge spike2gdsm it's the only gauge I have that still works but thank you for offering. And badbird I hope it does have the chip installed but if it does I'm not sure what to buy on the internet to install on my laptop. I'll probably talk to someone who works for eculink, but it would be nice to be able to put a code scanner on there for sure
