Searched the forums and didn't find any topics similar to my problem. So
I just finished a headgasket and timing job on my 95 eclipse, after getting the head back from a local machine shop.

After installing everything back together, I started it up. Upon starting, the rpm revs up to 4k and idled there. I then took my car back apart.

The timing lined up but redid it to make sure, found a broken thermostat (which I doubt could caused the high idle) and replaced it.

Finally started it up again and the same thing happened. I'm at a lost and need help to figure out my problem. Thanks in advance for any help.

That's a bit unusual, check for any vacuum leaks. Check the throttle body, make sure it's closed completely while the car is off. Something is flawed in the re-assembly most likely. It's hardly likely that something broke while off the car :p. Also, check the throttle cable, make sure it isn't snagged on anything.

I just quickly took a look and the throttle is closed and the cable is not caught on anything. Ill fully check everything when I get back, I'm thinking I didn't tightened the intake manifold properly after putting it back on.
Thanks for the reply, DSMcrazy3.

Since the problem has occured since head removal and timing you have to first assume the problem came from the location you where working on. I believe since you removed both vacuum lines from the valve cover during head removal you might want to start out by checking them for vacuum leaks. I would think you probably pulled a vacuum line on accident while wroking on the car. dont forget to check the cruise control box and control unit.

My car didn't come with cruise control ªnd all my vacuum lines were still connected. But after taking the intake manifold off, I noticed the gaskets were not in so good condition and falling apart (being cheap I reused it thinking it was still good instead of buying a new set). So Im waiting for a set ordered from autozone, and hopefully this will fix my problem.
Thanks again.

Update: I just wanted to update for anyone who might come upon this thread with a similar problem.
The cause to my high idle was that I had a vacuum leak at the egr pipe on the intake manifold due to me fogetting to tighten it up after my head job.
