HID kits and where to find them

DiamondStar, be aware that putting HIDs on a 1Ga is illegal in CA, and it's extremely obvious when you do it to a 1Ga with the stock popup light assemblies. Actually, it's also illegal to put on the H4 conversion kits that are all over eBay, as CVC requires that if a car came stock with sealed beams, that any upgrades done to it also be sealed-beam replacements. Only street-legal upgrade for our cars is the H4666 Sylvania SilverStars. Kinda crappy, I know. Had a pair and they were still dim as hell. :b

For the H4 conversion, a number of places sell them. Cheapass ones on eBay go for around $50 shipped, but usually look pretty ricey. There's a version on JC Whitney (part # 88ZX9846B), of which you'll need to buy two. The up side to these is, with the pattern on the lens glass, it's almost impossible to see inside and spot that they're replaceable bulbs, so long as the bulbs themselves aren't tinted. They're also metal and glass, rather than a cheapass plastic/glass unit (like the eBay ones)... much better to disperse the heat that the H4s generate, especially larger-wattage bulbs. Can pick up an H4 wiring harness at your local Autozone for $9.
Be warned, you may have to trim the back of your stock bulb adjustment pivot piece out to fit the deeper bulbs/adapter plug.

Probably could get an 'HID' replacement H4-fitment bulb at that point and slap it in the housing, no muss, no fuss. Though you'll likely want to rewire the headlights at that point with a proper relay system... drawing that much power, it's likely that the stock wiring would fry through if you don't. At that point, you get to drive by vehicle-firelight.

It's unfortunately somewhere between quite difficult and impossible (leaning toward the latter) to retrofit a projector assembly into a sealed beam headlamp, as on the '90 and '91 model year (as the OP's car profile says he is). Possibly with a 1Gb or a 1Gb-swapped 1Ga... otherwise, the H4 conversion assembly is your best bet, possibly with a Philips H4->HID conversion added on. As an added bonus, if you use the JCWhitney part listed above, the lens will look stock enough to pass a casual visual inspection... though with the Philips HID retrofit added on, it wouldn't pass a hood-pop, which would reveal the ballasts unless you managed to hide them VERY well (such as below the popup assembly, behind the front bumper in the bit of 'dead space' just above the stock plastic ducting).

go on ebay and you can buy actual sealed bean things for h4 bulbs, and then order h4 hids. i think i even have the sellers name on ebay,so all you have to do is go on ebay and look up his name and buy this stuff. but by the looks of that other dudes post you might want to check the laws in your in town. before you do that.

Cool. Im going to start to search on ebay for them and probably buy a pair. Im not really scared for the cops because theres so many hondas with yellow/blue head lights in my town.(ricers!!!:beatentodeath:) Also because my car is already illegal as it is, minus well go all the way with it.

I'd really recommend that JC Whitney part instead... it'll cost you about the same ($20 per side), given the '$10' H4 replacements up on eBay all cost around $45 for shipping, and come with nearly-unusable bulbs. They also all have clear (un-textured) lenses, which makes it starkly obvious that you are not running a stock light... and living in an area where police presence is already unfriendly to modified cars, keeping yours 'under the radar' so to speak can really save you... after all, getting pulled over for modified headlights can lead to a hood-pop or an exhaust check, at which point if the officer sees anything illegal, you're REALLY screwed. Why I try keep mine as sleeper as possible.

May end up getting rid of mine (eBay specials) in favor of the JC Whitney units, and look to sell these things off once the new ones come in. That can be discussed further in PM though.

A HID retrofit isn't hard at all. I plan to be the first person to do a complete writeup with detailed pics of how to do a HID retrofit (that people can actually read and follow) into either the stock 2Gb headlight housings or Ebay projectors (not sure which one to go with). Too bad, it won't be until January though. I have the TSX projectors already, I just need the ballasts, bulbs and wiring.

I'll be getting a set for my expedition from SharpHID since they help keep this site up and running.

If you can pull off a HID retro into a 2G OEM housing that looks good, is waterproof and can be properly aligned, I'll be impressed to say the least.

In the photo below, the order of difficulty to install a true HID projector is arranged with the hardest retro job on the top and the easiest two on the bottom. That is a single TSX projector in the photo.

The problem with the OEM housing is that the entire reflector is the aiming device and mounting a projector in there and then allowing for correct alignment up-down, right-left and rotationally is a real challenge. I have not seen anyone pull this off and end up with something I would be proud to put on my car.

The next projector down is the newer ebay version. It is difficult as well as you can't easily re-use the halogen projector mounting points. At least with this housing you have a bezel and housing that are accomodating to a projector-style light. The short depth of this housing is an issue too but choosing small projectors will ease the retro. I spent a lot of time installing Hella E55 Bi-xenons in one of these.

The last two housings are the easiest and have been written up in a few forums with basic how-to's. I personnaly don't care for this style of light so I have not done a retro on one of these. A TSX projector will probably be a good candidate though just from sizing one up on the work bench.

Good luck and take lots of pics.

Yeah, I definitely know it'll be a challenge, hence why I'd like to be the first. I'll have help from people who have done countless amounts of retrofits. I've also helped with a couple retrofits on both Ebay projectors that you posted and actually I partially followed your writeup doing those. I'll make sure to take lots of pics and all....

I'd love to have some retrofitted HIDs on my car. I just haven't been convinced they are worth it yet. There are also so many threads out there, I get confused on what is necessary to buy, easiest to buy to work with, what headlight assembly is easier, what parts you actually need. Blah blah blah...

It would be great to see your write-up. I need something kind-of idiot proof that I could follow.

I don't think I'll do it until I have a spare set of headlights to work with. I don't trust myself enough to hack on my only headlamps.
