Hey fellas, my name is Corey, and I'm new to DSM's. I come from the 240 community and consider myself mechanically inclined. I just traded one of my S14s for a 90 Talon TSi AWD, and like the couple friends I know who are DSMers say... no DSM is perfect. This one is no exception. Though it only has 100k miles, it does have some typical 1g problems like cracked turbo manifold, valve cover gasket leak, and a couple other things. One thing I don't know where to start with is that the car misfires... well, it's more like a dead cylinder. I'm thinking there's an injector stuck open, or one of the plugs is fouled out.

Are there any common problems with DSMs that would lead to this problem?

You should start my a good tune up, plugs wire and all the other stuff. Also do a compression test.

Narrowed it down a bit today. Bought new plugs, went to go put them in and something struck me as odd... they're NGK G-Power (Iridium?) plugs. So I pull the last three out one at a time, and they look great. Nice color, no oil contamination... then I pull cylinder 1 and it looks retarded. Has a brownish color on the ground electrode and the center electrode, and no black soot, which indicates to me that there's no combustion in that cylinder. So I pull the injector clip off, and notice the wiring is hacked. Like, twisted and wire taped kinda hacked :ohdamn:. When I pulled the clip, the idle didn't change. Obviously, there's some sort of injector fault here. Didn't have a noid light handy, or a DMM, so I couldn't test to see if it's getting pulse. Regardless, I'm going to patch the harnesses by soldering and putting heat shrink tubing over the wires to prevent any kind of breaking of injector pulse signals.

In the event the injector is bad, do the non-turbo 4G's and turbo 4G's have the same injectors, or do I need the turbo specific injectors?

Get rid of those Iridium plugs. You're going to want NGK BPR6's gapped at .028.
You'll need the turbo injectors.
The n/t ones came with 350cc injectors I believe. The turbo ones are 450cc injectors.

Edit: And fill out your profile. It'll help us answer all of your questions depending on your mods.

Welcome to DSMtuners! :D

+1 on the NGK's. Dsms came from the factory with the bpr6's and thats that. Those

iridium plugs tend to go to crap.

Yeah, I don't have a very high opinion of the iridiums. I liked my platinum NGKs in my S14s though.

What kind of spark plug wires are good, NGK? I hate Bosch products, so anything from them is out of the question LOL. I know stuff like Nology HotWires are no good either haha. I've been around the block a few times, just new to the DSM game. After owning six 240s (2 S13 fastbacks, 1 S13 convertible, 3 S14s), I just wanted a change of pace.

Yea, it really doesn't matter. I would just get anything 8mm or bigger. I run 7mm but I have like zero mods so its not necessary for me and plus I had to get them cause the car was missing and I didn't have the money for 8mm at the time.

The N/T's have 390cc injectors. Close :)

You should probably look into updating the injector clips. The 1g clips are a common weak spot they tend to break and rattle loose under vibrations. Stick with bpr7es gapped to .028 If your unsure of the injectors they are labeled with the size on them. They should be blue top 450s if they are the stock 1gs. The 2gs are a black top 450.

PS post up in the welcome thread

Good Luck
