So i was reading some DSM ads and found a 90 Tsi AWD shell with tranny and rear end real cheap, so i'm thinking of buying it but i need a turbo motor right? well i was talking to a buddy of mine with a 91 tsi AWD and brought it up that the trannys are not too different, so i thought. i've already got a 90 N/T talon with a 4g63 6 bolt and i'm thinking that a AWD tranny should bolt right up. N/T AWD!! has anyone tried this before? if any one has any info let me know, i'm probibly going to get the AWD shell anyway since i want a tsi more that anything! :talon: so if the N/t swap doesnt work than i'll just buy a turbo motor but it would be cool if it worked. let me know guys!

why wouldn't you just put another turbo motor back in??? ( especially considering a 1g turbo and n/t motor are very muc halike ) That's like someone buying a gsx and taking off the turbo and putting a header on it. It's unique, but why?

nt awd sounds like it would make are car4s slower seeing how there isnt to much mods we can do to help, pull the awd but i dont know 4 sure :dsm:

I believe u will need to use the turbo flywheel, clutch, etc... as they are different for the n/t and turbo cars It will be slower than an FWD given power is lost in drivetrain like adamGTX said, But do what YOU want. It will work  ...............

hmm well the awd means you have to turn 2 more wheels . also means its alot heavier and ur giving it less power .. i would say turbo it because u are going to need the power to turn all 4 wheels

well i could just turbo it later on i plan to do a n/t turbo conversion anyway just for fun but i dont think any ones done this before so i just want to say i did it, if its slow as f**k i'll just turbo it. :thumb: :talon:

you wont be the first....and you wont be the second.
I had a nt awd and there was one for sale near where i live a few months ago.

it actually didnt feel any slower then a fwd nt car and was fun in snow

I've done it before myself. The situation was, in my area there are plenty of dirt oval racetracks. They had recently introduced a four cylinder class (that didn't allow turbos) and my friend and I thought we'd do it together. He was the driver/owner and I was the engineer/mechanic/pit crew. Anyway, the way we had it set up was pretty much track only but I suppose you could have made a street car out of it if you wanted. We ended up selling it off to move up a division to RWD domestic V8 Street Stock class. Here's what we had in it: (BTW, by the end of the season it was RWD instead of AWD)

90 Eagle Talon AWD manual
used AWD transmission, transfer case, stock 3 bolt rear end
91 4G63 N/A motor
stock rods and crank
balance shafts eliminated
Engine Tech (I think that's the brand) generic flat top pistons
1.6 Hyundai head for more compression
fully ported and polished head
0.5mm oversized valves (the head came stock with them)
Crower springs and retainers
Crower Stage 2 cams
Hyundai tubular exhaust header to 3.5 inch exhaust that ended at drivers feet
stock turbo fuel pump
Dropzone coilovers mixed with various springs for the correct spring rate at every corner
KYB struts
N/A fuel pressure regulator and stock N/A injectors
ran on 100 octane race gas throughout the season
Fidanza lightweight flywheel
fully lightened car
full confinement cage
N/A wiring harness
N/A ECU

Basically, power was like a lightswitch. If you put your foot in it, those cams would slam you into the backseat. It was more like having a peppy V8 under the hood. Still probably wouldn't have outrun a turbo car though.

i like the idea.i saw a guy at the shop i used to work at that had a galan gsx.it was a4g63,awd, but it was NA.I told the guy nice car and he said thanks,i told him i wold like to buy it from him when he sells it.he came back 6 months later with a new mazda 3 talikin bout o i sold it for a grand,i was like, you dodo.but anyways it felt faster than the othe galants i rode in, and the suspension and drivetrain looked just like the 1g awd at first sight.like home boy said,if you wanna be different go ahead, why not do the mods you can, slap some street cams on there, maybe some go,go juice and bam you've got power.Im pretty sure with cams and some nitrous youll be "pretty close" to a stock turbo car.

Still looking for a AWD shell so i can do this conversion, any body know where i can get one??? i plan to put on headers, full cat back, high flow cat, intake, plugs, wires, injecters, fuel rail, and cams if i have enough money, im shooting for like 175 HP which would be more than enough to move the four wheels but i like that RWD idea too :sneaky:

really? even if i run nitrous? well i guess so but i am still putting together a list of things i need for at least 150-160 HP ive been researching and the N/T is hard to build up, but i gonna get some stock turbo cams, and full exaust and intake, as well as pullys, and injectors, and then i'll go on the bottle hope for 160HP :tease:

You be able to buy the car and bolt it right up. Like someone else said you are going to have to get a turbo clutch and flywheel. Now you can use the stock turbo harness but you are going to need an NT ECU. You just plug in the ECU and go. You are going to have to make some sort of a power adapter for the resitor pack. Unless you are planning on using the 450CC injectors. You could get some 390's, and then you can leave the IRP there. So to go from Turbo to NT is very easy. The other way is a little more complicated.

I have a GGSX so my car is Non Turbo AWD and it was a blast to drive. I am just now trying to finish my turbo conversion.

Good Luck.

My winter car is a 90 AWD with a 4G63 n/t motor. It's not fun to drive on asphalt but a blast in the snow. Winter tires and I'm cookin' past anything trying to drive in 2 feet of snow.

Basically used everything from the AWD. Flywheel, clutch kit, tranny, t-case, driveshaft, etc.

You can actually use the n/t flywheel and clutch kit too. Even though they look much different, the two crusial things are in place; 1. Where the t-out bearing hits the PP and 2. Where the clutch will move in the bellhousing.

Either way you look at it, it's fine.

The total cost of my n/t AWD was around $40. Yes, forty dollars.

The 90 AWD was a parts car where I sold the motor and I got a free motor for doing a turbo conversion on an ES. So there is my $40 winter car.

yep totally has been done, i was looking at a gsx thinking to myself (holy shit in elyria ohio no way?!?!?!11oneone!?!?@?@!#$!#$$wtf?!?!?@!#) well the 50 year old guy comes out and was like ill sell this for 3000 i was like OMG i want to leak from my eyes....when he pops the hood i look down and wham bam his name is sam he totally took the turbo off the car because it was "too fast" for his son (which went and bought a faster car) i laughed at him and got in my 1g n/t and sped away cause i was faster than THAT GSX...ahhh i love old people
