HELP ! Wich belt did i snap !!!!!!

Hey guys what a day. I finaly got sum decent weather and decided to change my oil to mobile 1 10x30 synthetic. drove it around and was so pleased whith how the car ran. A few hours later I started the car to go to my girlfriends house n it sounded weird so i went in and came back out and it was making sickk ass noiese so i checked the engine bay and tried to trace the sound and it was coming from the belt area on the drivers side so i turned the car off and check the belts shure enuff , one of my belts split in half. it was still on the pullys but it just looks spilt in half. Now i dont know what the belt is for its not the thick belt that the cam gears are on nor the one next to it its the last belt all the way to the right . I took a pic and mabey you can let me know what is it and how fuked up my car is :(

hard to tell by the picture, but its either power steering, alternator, or A/C.....got to be one of those, car should run fine without the power steering and/or A/C belts, they just wont work......but if it is the alternator belt........full power loss once that battery goes, any of the belts are an easy fix.....good luck
 
I just went out and checked and think its the altenator belt . Here are some more pics ? If this is what it is. Did I mess anythingup in the car ? My friend said if i snap a belt. It could mess up valves and snap my other belts possibly. here are more pics. Also if it is this altenator belt. is the install hard ? and about how much is the belt.. thanks for your help guys

The way you mess up valves when snapping a belt is if it screws up the main timing belt. You should be fine. Just need to replace that particular belt.
 
OK. So i finally cut off the slashed in half alternator belt. Now we have another problem. Mabye it is mabey its not. The one pulley ( the large one) it looks like as if 2 belts go on it. on on each side. I could be wrong. Well its lose as hell and im not shure if its supposed to be lose cuz when the belt is on it it gets tight . So i dont know what to do I took pics with a red arrow showing the lose pulley. if there are any diagrams of the 1g belts or engine bay let me know so i can show you. here are the pics. thanks

Dude! Don't flip out! Its just the waterpump / alternator belt. Get a ride to the store and replace it. No harm no foul. Life will be good for about 500 miles then you will have to tighten it and your set.

Don't drive it though your car will overheat. You should put you timing belt cover back on too.
 
so the pulley is now in 2 pieces correct. this is a common failure in old cars like ours. You need to buy a replacement crank puley and while your at it new belts. can ya take a picture of the puley you pulled off i wanna make sure i am correct with my diagnosis
 
I had that same problem. MY crankpully just split apart and belts just fell off instead of snapping.. bad part was the crack like ate into the side of my case and almost cut through =\
 
Wow yea thats exactly what happend it ate into the engine. I guess im gona have to get it welded. What did u do ? just buy a new pulley And fix the belt ?
 
The weird thing is my car still drives and runs. the check engine lite aand stuff is on. also no power steering but the car still drives . I drove it 2 miles to my uncles shop, and his friends gona fix it. Im a little worried about the hole in the side of the engine from the pully rubbing it.
 
on my 89 galant the Alternator belt did the EXACT SAME THING. IT would throw belts, Schred them in half EXACTLY. Its ur Harmonic Dampner. Get a new one. ur car WILL run. it might hold for a couple of days. but Eventualy it will get so bad that it wont spin the pully anymore. drive it to a mechanic while you still can.
 
Just some advice for you.

If those snapped, the balance shaft and timing belt with probably not be far behind. I would change all of them since you are going to be digging into it anyways. You do not want the bs belt snapping and throwing off your timing belt and bending your valves, or just the timing belt snapping and the same result. Bent valves. You will need to change a lot of little things too, tensioners, pulleys, etc. ref: the VFAQ on it.
 
It was the harmonic balancer. Im gettin it replaced as well as all the belts. beisides timing belt. I dont have the money for that rite now. Ill get it done next month. They said 250 for the T-belt install is that a decent price ? The car is a 90 tsi what other stuff can i do to prolong the cars life. like preventivie maintnece kinda stuff
 
$250 is hella cheap for a t-belt install if the belts are included, a t-belt change is known to cost around $500 Do some basic maintance if ya havent already. Spark plugs, spark plug wires, air filter, oil blah blah the basics
