well ive had the car for about a year and a half now, and during the 1st month i had it, i had to replace the oem dipstick with an autozone one. soon after, my car started bogging! i thought it was a boost leak, but turns out it wasnt. I just got a new oem dipstick today from mach V and it only has two notches on it to tell you if its full, low, etc... compared to others which have actual words on them. Someone want to "refresh" me on what areas mean what? Im assuming the lower notch means it needs oil and the top one means too much? the only reason im asking is because when i installed the oem dipstick my oil level was about 2" over the top notch WTF and this kind of confused me because i didnt think it could be that much
over
which brings me to my second question. i have blue smoke out the exhaust... could this have been caused due to too much oil in my pan?

yes, this is an embarrassing question, ROFL :coy:

How much oil did you put in the car. You should have known from your previous oil changes that it only takes from 4.5-5qts. of oil. Too much oil will cause the car to bog and smoke as well.

when i was switching from the old broken oem dipstick to the autozone one, i tried to line up the ends of both dipsticks until i got about the same reading on both of them. but now it apprears that its not even close. i did an oil change on friday (3days ago) and only used just about 3.75/4 qts until i got the new dipstick so i could check to see if i was getting an accurate amount in the engine. The bogging stopped, but the smoke is still there

The reading must be done right after you shut the car off so that the oil is warm and the lines are primed. If you do it with the car on, the crank splashes the oil on the dipstick and you can't get an accurate reading.

Also, the top mark is full, the second mark is 1 quart low.

Happy oiling.

Oh and FYI, the manual for a turbo says like 4.5 quarts or something but I've always found it needed almost 5 quarts to be full based on reading the dipstick. If you don't have at least 4 quarts in there you are definitely low and the engine will probably hesitate and knock.

As for lining up the dipsticks, you have to line up the top of them where the handle is, not the bottom, just incase that isn't what you did.

Lastly, do a compression test. If your numbers are below 125 or they deviate more than 10%, squirt some oil into the cylinder with a turkey baster and turn the starter to get the walls nice and oily. Then check the compression again. If it went up significantly that might be where your oil is going. Otherwise check your turbo for shaft play and check your intake pipe for oil residue and get a catch can and replace your PCV. Good luck.

A gallon over the surface of a DSM sump won't show expansion enough to be able to measure with a stick. You may actually find more oil on the stick when cold because more of it may have drained back than in a freshly-run engine.
The top notch is "full" the bottom notch is 1 quart low, and any indication lower than that means someone from Mitsubishi will be coming around to give you the treatment you give your engine.
What else is there to do while the gas tank's getting re-filled?

Sorry to bring up a dead post but rather than post a new thread I just wanted some clarification.

I checked my dipstick today and noticed something similar as OP. There are no lines or words on my dipstick only 2 notches. This doesn't seem to match up with my owners manual. Do I have the correct dipstick? If so where is the oil supposed to be at? the highest notch?

If I need a new dipstick does anyone have a part number for the OEM one?

Even aftermarket ones follow this.
