hey guys, i was driving home today and my check engine light came on in my girls 1998 gst sypder. when i got home i checked the code and it pulled up p0510 (closed throttle position switch). could someone please tell me what this could mean. could i just change out the tps sensor or something? it was idling around 400 rpms for the past couple of weeks so i adjusted the idle screw on it about a week ago. sorry if im posting this in the wrong area.

ohh yeah and for mods on her car all she has is a 3inch apexi n1 turbo back exhaust with a cat eliminator, godspeed frountmout intercooler with all the upper and lower hardpiping and a greddy type s bov non-recirculating. thank you guys!

This P0510 code commonly refers to a defective throttle positioner sensor but a quick way to check this is to verify the tps wiring connections. Look for any wire that seems to be to close to a metal or unprotected. A shorted tps wire can interfere with the tps signal and can cause this code. Sometimes, it is a good idea to check the ground wire also and see if it shares a ground with the coolant sensor. If it is, check also the integrity of the coolant sensor and if possible replace it.

Unplug the TPS. On TPS connector measure continuity from black wire to yellow-red. Should be near 0 with throttle closed and infinite when its open even a little. If you don't get near 0 either the TPS is out of adjustment (switch never gets to close), or switch is bad, or wiring/connector is bad. Adjustment is on page 13A-263 of the DSM Backup Manual.

TPS Testing Procedure:
1.Test the resistance between pins 1 and 4. The resistance should measure 3500 - 6500 ohms (3.5k - 6.5k)
2.Measure the resistance between pins 2 and 4 while rotating the throttle open. The resistance should change smoothly, smoothly being the key word here.

ill test it today when it stops raining.... thank you guys for the help. one more question... if the tps is bad wouldnt that effect the way the car drove because it doesnt seem like any loss of performance or power or anything. the only thing it does is just idle real low. sorry for the stupid questions.

Not all the time. The ECU can use maps that it has saved to keep the car running and drivable. The mechanical parts of the engine ie the throttle plate, can control the engine running with the help of the o2 sensor and MAF.

well i just changed out the tps sensor and the car is working and idling fine now. its driving much better now. thank you all for helping me out! :thumb:
