Very true. I am by no means overweight, but I switched from regular to diet soda and lost 11lbs in a couple months doing nothing else. At first I hated diet and just switched because diabetes runs in my family, but now I prefer diet.

Chipotlaway gets expensive!

HAHAHA...."Billy Mays here with, Chipotlaway"

Read up and if you still have questions I can help answer some of them.

Main points if you don't feel like reading all that or just skimming it.

1. Eat more protein, at the very least take your weight X .7 and thats the minimum grams of protein you should be taking in.

2. Lifting weights helps gain muscle which leads to a faster metabolism, granted cardio works too.

3. HIIT training > steady long distance cardio.

4. Fats and carbs are GREAT for your body but people need to just be smart about them. Eat fatty things like nuts, which are low in saturated fats and no trans fats. Also carbs should be in the low GI index which usually means high fiber and low sugar such as oatmeal, sweet potatoes, brown rice, yada yada.

Feel free to PM for workout plans.

My cousin is an ameture bodybuilder and his roommate is in the process of turning pro.

quit drinking beer or liquer, i was skinny 5'11 at 158lbs when i was 23 am now 25 but at the jan 09 i was 210lbs(not fat just bigger with a small beer gut) now am 190 flat stomach decent build . i just worked hard at my job, stay away from beer, red meat, no fast food i ate most fish chicken fruits and veggies

Thats funny this thread got started. Me and my roommates started a diet a couple months ago. I was/am fat. Some of you guys calling yourselves fat I sorta laughed at. Not because you were fat but because you thought you were fat. It makes me wish I would've thought that way before I gained my weight. I am 5'11" and weighed 280 lbs. We started the diet and now I've dropped 36 lbs. and it feels awesome. I am hoping to get around maybe 220 or so and start working out to build a little muscle mass. To all that are on diets just stick with it and you'll be happy with the results!

hmmmmm
I read somewhere that sex is the best cardio workout
Not even joking dude this dude lost like 50 pounds

:ohdamn: People want to think that, but in all reality it burns more calories than sitting on a couch but not as much as getting up and doing some real cardio.

P90X...

You'll lose weight while building lean muscle mass. My buddy has gone through three 90 day cycles of the program in which he started at 295lbs and 30% body fat. He's down to 180 and 8% body fat and now regularly does Triathalons and shit like that!

I recently started the program. Starting at 268lbs. And just from eating less crap all together and eating the right stuff. I've managed to drop 20lbs in the last two months.

Also, I bought an elliptical trainer, because when you weigh as much as I did, the impact of running literally hurts your knees. With an elliptical, you can burn the same amount of calories while not putting excess stress on your knees.

I'm just 10lbs away from what I weighed in high school. But, no where near close to my goal! I'd like to be under 200lbs in 4 more months.

Btw, I also have two sit down jobs. It's hard to get motivated to do anything after you've been sitting all day long "Working".

Here's some motivation I guess...

Wow man, great job. You don't look like the same person at all.

Seems like a bunch of us in the same boat, and we are all around the same size. I noticed a couple of you guys are into creating workout routines and I for one am really interested in it. I have some before pictures I'm embarresed to post. If you're interested in some before/after work to show you skills I'm down. Create the program and somewhat of a basic diet, or just a plan(ie. this many cals/protien per day) and I'll follow it to a T. Might help out your business if you're going to start one. I'm sure some others on here would also. Maybe a contest!

Picking up another treadmill this weekened. I'd like to start the first 4 weeks with body weight only then hit the gym. I have a great gym with anything you could ever want so sky's the limit after the 4 weeks of body weight exercises.

Dude one thing I will say about weight lifting. Start slow when getting back into it. Don't go "I did 225 for sets, I'll start there" or something to that affect. The first few weeks back, slowly ramp up intensity. Stretch afterwards-it creates space between the various layers of fascias and allows for muscle growth. Listen to the protein remarks. The body will not synthesize protein into fat. Protein shakes aren't just for beefcakes-they are for men and women alike. Eat clean, little to no processed foods (breads, pastas, etc.). Take a vitamin. You'll feel like shit for a bit while your body adjusts back, and then you will start progressing pretty quickly for the first few months. A couple other important things-follow a good workout routine, and use a journal when lifting and doing cardio. Try to beat the numbers on eat workout. You'll get there, and I wish you and your wife the best at beating her cancer.

Less body roll in that Rx-7 when drifting around left hand turns. Other than that, If you really wanna lose weight while at a desk job like me. Just bring a yogurt in the morning, a banana. At lunch, eat a nice turkey sandwhich and go home for dinner and make chicken, steak, pork chops. Keep it lean though, less fat, minimal grease. Ive stayed 180 pds @ 6'1" for a while the way i eat. I literally sit in a chair for 40 hours a week at work. We've gotten so lazy at work, We conference call our employees even if there right next door, screw walking.

I've been working on losing weight for a while now. I started with something simple, no more candy and no more soda. That alone was good for about 8lbs after 6 weeks. As I went I started to add in a little activity and a better diet. Just about two weeks ago I started running two days on one day off and then went down to the store and bought $35 worth of fruits and vegetables which I eat exclusively for one meal a day.

I've also nearly completely quit drinking beer. I drink whiskey and ice or bloody marys now so that at least I'm getting a salad with my booze.

My only problem as far as stepping up my weight loss from here is that I just can't run far enough The first few days I was able to run until I could barely stand but now the muscles on the outside fronts of my calves tighten up to the point where I can't bend my ankles and it hurts to even walk before I'm actually tired. I've been working on stretching them more but it doesn't seem to help.

Over the past year though I've lost and kept off about 35lbs which puts me down at about 215. My goal is 180 in about 18 months.

This body is a funny thing. I've been doing a lot of research about losing weight and things like that. I've found that if you get your body into a "performance" run your really do not burn fat. You body goes into a mode where it will burn your protein/muscle, but if you do a decent pace walk with an incline your body will burn total fat. It basically happens when your heart rate reaches a certain point due to really pushing yourself.

As we all know breakfast is a must have(I hate breakfast), ugh. If any of you want some very cool excel charts let me know. They can do pretty much anything as far as tracking and creating workouts for you.

Not sure what motivates you guys, but if any of you want a challenge, I'll gladly compete against you. I'm pretty much motivated by competition, if you say i can't, I will.

Maybe you're not doing it right then:sneaky:

Anyway, I like the yogurt-bananna breakfast. It kills the coffee gut-rot, and it's a ton of vitamins and such. When I force myself to eat breakfast, It makes me hungry for lunch super-early. If I don't eat breakfast, then I don't really ever eat anything untill around 2-4pm. By then I'm shocking my system by putting food in it. If I eat the breakfast, and then a small early lunch, then I don't gorge myself with a later lunch or a 4-braut dinner.

This thread does come-off a bit like a bunch of whiners complaining about getting old:D It happens to us all. Sure I wish I was sexier-looking and feeling, and healthier, too. Personnally, I'd rather complain about feeling broke right now.

Eating breakfast does the same thing to me, normally I don't eat breakfast or lunch and I'm fine. But when I eat breakfast by 10:30 I'm starving to death.

Not sure why you posted a stupid comment about a bunch of whiners... I can say the same thing to you about that.... I don't worry about money at all, you must not have the motivation/dedication to go far enough in your company.

Biggest myth ever. HIIT training will yield the fastest results and take the least amount of time.

When people jog they burn both muscle and fat, when people do hiit training they burn muscle and fat. This is why people increase the protein intake and do light to heavy lifting to help build or sustain mucsle instead of lose it.

My friend started at 5'10" 260lbs and is now down to 230 in roughly 3 months with little to no cardio (we only did it the first 2 months 3 days a week 20ish minutes only) and just lifting weights and a good diet plan. Plus he has packed on some muscle. He went from barely fitting in 40" waist to making 36" fit a little loose.

Best advice is eat heathy, work out hard, and enjoy the results.

Also, look at this thing as a marathon and not a sprint, take your time to enjoy it. Otherwise, you will burn out and not stick with it.

Where do you get your info on it being a myth?

I do agree that you can definitely lose weight by simply weight lifting. I really do not thing however that it is the healthiest way to do it. Most of my friends are very very heavy weight lifters. One in particular got to the point where he could not even pass his PT test for the Army because he had no cardio. I would estimate his body fat % around 6% max. And yet he was not in "shape" at all.

Eating healthy is huge, and probably the largest part of getting the weight off. I was over 228lbs 2 days ago, but I changed my diet and have been through 1 workout day and I'm around 224lbs. These weights were taken at the same time of moring.

You've totally called me out!:applause:

I usually assume most comments in the Hangout are to be taken tongue-in-cheek. My GF freaks out all the time about getting older/fatter. I was just kidding around. You can always work at staying in shape, but you can't do anything about getting older.
Myself, I spent all summer and all my money turning 1 totalled Eclipse and one Accord into two running Eclipses. One is my first turbo. I hope I can get a little slack around here for that. Plus I started the year with a total heap of a 1990 GMC 1/2-ton work truck, and now I'm driving an '01 Super-Duty. I'm styling around with AC, power windows and seats, etc...

So yes, my dedication to the almighty DSM trumped my dedication to financial solvency, and I've got a damn-fine truck, too.

At most, all I really meant about motivation/dedication was that either of us are sitting at a computer TALKING about doing things that we each know we could get off the computer and actually DO. I was already making fun of myself as much as I was of you.:sneaky:
