I have a 91 Talon TSI AWD now, and love it. But I have the chance to trade it for a pristine 88 IROC Camaro with a tuned port 355. The camaro looks way better, but the performance of the Talon is incredible. Having just sold my other camaro, I have about 3 grand to toss around for mods. I know the camaro would get heads/cam/intake/exhaust and many other supporting mods with that money, and would be in the low 12's. BTW drag racing is really all I like to do right now.

With that said, What can I do to my Talon with 3 grand to make it basically haul ass in the quarter? Ive only had the car for about 5 months now, and know what general mods are good, but no idea on how much performance they actually add.

The Talon is setup more for auto-x now, with Koni adjustables front/rear, eibach springs, Ronal wheels, strut tower brace, etc. But for power it only has a supra fuel pump, manual boost controller @ 17psi now, K&N filter with cut airbox, mass air honeycomb removed, a ported big16G and thats about it. It also has a spec stage 3 clutch

Where would spending 3 grand on performance engine mods put this car in the 1/4 and powerwise? With the basic knowledge I've acquired so far I made this list:

1. 3" Turbo back exhaust
2. Front mount with hard piping
3. SAFC II
4. Profec E01 boost controller
5. External blow off valve (It just sounds too cool)
6. Z rated treads, nitto most likely
7. Air intake
8. intake manifold
9. HKS 272 cams
10. Injectors and AFPR
11. A palm pilot for logging (car is already wired for it)
12. Intercooler sprayer w/ nitrous

Please let me know if I'm forgetting something, or if some of that stuff is unnecessary. Thanks to anyone who can help me make up my mind over this situation.

hard question to answer sounds like you want both.

in your current form you should be able to hit 12's no problem with 3000 more dollars.( if that is your question)

look at where you would want to be in the end with each car and how much will it cost you to get there with each car.

my opinion is, as long as it's fast Im happy.

i would dump the cams and the ic sprayer. get a good fmic and you will be fine. cams between all the work and the outcome its not worth the money imho, just turn up the boost a little more. but i would add a ported 2g or evo 3 ex mani, and a tube o2 housing. also a fuel pump. if you have a afpr then get the 255hp.

I have a fuel pump now that is off of a Turbo Supra. I have run 20lbs of boost with this and it has stayed dead rich the whole time. Does anyone know what the supra pump flows, or what it can compare too, EX. walbro 190, 255 etc. Thanks

3grand and a good condition awd 1g= 12s or better....Oh and camaros are fugly :barf:

not at all ... the older camaros look a hell of a lot better than a 1g. I'd go for the camaro .. I've seen them go 11s or faster on motor and then they can always be sprayed. Parts are cheaper and they look sharper. RWD is also a lot of Fun. T-tops is a plus as well. a 1g dsm is nice, but if both cars cost the same I'd get the camaro because it is more mod friendly and will be more reliable as well imo.

1. good
2. good
3. good (no longer needed if you pick option 4 or 5)
4. waste of money unless you are going to use e-manage (a MBC will work fine)
5. Venting = bad unles you do it right (GM MAF w/ MAFT)
6. good
7. good
8. stock 1g works well. new manifold not really needed.
9. if you want cams the HKS 264/272 combo works best
10. good (660's should do the trick) (get the AFPR soon with your current pump)
11. good
12. not really needed with a FMIC

ps: the supra fuel pump is a Denso if I am not mistaken and runs at 320LPH so an AFPR is really needed to keep the richness down as it is way overflowing the stock FPR.

oh and by the way.. if you had all of those mods above. with a good tune on race gas.. i would estimate you could get a high 11 second 1/4 pass

on a 14b????

all those mods are more than 3k as well.

1. 3" Turbo back exhaust - 500
2. Front mount with hard piping - 500
3. SAFC II - 300
4. Profec E01 boost controller - not sure ... 200?
5. External blow off valve (It just sounds too cool) - rice ... 200
6. Z rated treads, nitto most likely - 500
7. Air intake - 80
8. intake manifold - 500
9. HKS 272 cams - 600
10. Injectors and AFPR - 400
11. A palm pilot for logging (car is already wired for it) - already wired???? - 200
12. Intercooler sprayer w/ nitrous - 350

that comes to 4330 without install and tuning is on top of that as well .. all those mods are about 4500 with you doing the work. You should be in the mid / low 12s with those mods ... high 11 on c16 but your stock O2 sensor won't last more than a few passes. Those are also $150 to replace...

now a 3g camaro on the other hand can do 11s on motor with a lot higher trap speed with the same amount of money in mods. Then you can spray another 100 at least and be doing low 11 high 10 if you are lucky. What exactly is your goal?

your going to have to rebuild that auto trans on the camaro dude. and thats big bucks. you wont be able to do a performance trans rebuild and have money left to get in the 11's. stick w/dsm. im really into the older ones too. they do low 14's stock!but tranny is weak. :talon:

um... did your friend put in a trans from a late model camaro or something?or maybe something rebuilt? well anyways dude. if not the trans. the rear is going to go out. 11's w/traction WILL bring death to your rear. keep it in the fam. :thumb: :talon: :dsm: :laser:

Thanks for all the repsonses. Thanks to david for the rundown on the list and the fuel pump info. 1 fast 97, I can get all those mods for 3 grand if not less. I'm very fortunate to have friends in the right places, IE. fabricators, and a best friend with a wholesalers account, and the turbo is a buschur racing big 16g with ported exhaust side.

As far as the camaro goes, rebuilding the trans is included in its 3000 dollar list. I wont pay many people to work on my car. Im too cheap so I learn how to do it myself, or make friends with people who can help me. Also I have a 8.5" 10 bolt with an auburn pro posi, richmond 3.73's and moser 33 spline axles, so breaking something in the rear wouldnt be too much of a worry. But I wont need that anymore because I have decided to stick with the talon. So PM me if you need a rear end that'll hold 800HP.

My goal with this car is to retain full factory appearance, AC, cruise, etc. and have the capabilities of driving it to the track and laying down sub 12 second times, and also to be able to handle a zo6 on the street.

After reading these posts, and really coming to the conclusion on how I want to use my car, which is for street racing, (i know its bad and irresponsible, but its an addicting adrenaline rush) the AWD of the talon is what I need most. Thanks again for the help. I know I'll be coming back to this board many more times as I get deeper into this build.
