help failed ca smog, car is 100% stock

I just bought a gsx turbo about 2 weeks ago, He didnt get it smoged so i told him id just send him the bill, Well the problem is the car didnt pass the car passed every test except the idle test it said the max was 100 and i got a 117. What do i need to do to help it pass? The car is 100% stock. I just did a oil change 1k ago, Maybe spark plugs and wires? I hear nkg are good but what local store sells them? Autozone, Napa, Kragen?

Did you you run it hard befor the smog test? You need to make sure that cat is warmed up.

Follow the manufacturer's recommended maintenance and tune-up schedule.

Replace/inspect your spark plugs and wires (cheap spark plugs are fine - bosch super), clean/replace your air filter, check/replace your pcv valve, check for vacuum leaks, do a boost leak test, check your o2 sensors and egr's condition...etc.

I also recommend that you replace your catalytic converter or borrow one of your friends cat that have recently passed a smog check.

Oh, make sure to take your car for a good 30 mins drive before a smog test.
Ex: if your showing up for a smog test at around 10am, give it a good half hour drive to fully warm up your cat.

Don't buy bosch plugs - NGK's are already cheap. Use what you car was designed for.

make sure your spark plugs are properly gapped. thats why my car didnt pass smog

In case you were wondering, the proper spark plugs are NGK BPR6ES gapped at .028. You can get them at NAPA, 4 for under 10 bucks.

Thanks guys ill check out napa, also what spark plug wires should i get? and what size can i get? id like to go bigger if thats ok, What would you recommend?

NGK plug wires are standard on our cars, as are NGK plugs. As stated above, don't use Bosch. I used Bosch in my Mirage once because I didn't know any better, and it made the car run even more crappily than a stock 4g15 does normally. It's unlikely that your plug wires are the problem if it doesn't pop like crazy in the high end... still, inspecting them for arc-burns is always a good idea.

Short version:
If you failed Hydrocarbons (HC), you most likely have dirty valves or injectors. Clean the fuel system with a gas additive, and run through the full tank before re-testing on clean, additive-free gas. You also might have a dead O2 sensor, or a dirty air filter. High hydrocarbons means that the fuel is not being burned completely/correctly.

If you failed nitrous oxides (NOx), your catalytic converter is either not warmed up, or dead. Warm it up for a half hour to an hour before your test, street and freeway driving. Get it good and hot, and do NOT shut off the car. If they shut the car off for more than five minutes, insist that it be allowed to warm up completely again, before testing. If it's warmed up and still fails NOx, get a new cat, as yours is toast.



Oh, and by the way. It's California law that the seller is responsible for making sure a car passes smog before they can sell it. They then have a three-month period in which they can freely sell the car.
