Ive been getting this wierd tick coming from my engine lately. it will be there one day and not be there another. im confused. i was thinking and i hear that it could be the egr valve ticking, or even the injectors, but you can definetly hear it even with the hood closed and even from behind the car. it doesnt seem to be coming from the engine itself...more like the intake manifold. i opened the oil cap with the car running and the noise didnt get any louder. even when i was trying to figure it out, it went away, then came back. what could this be? im hoping it isnt anything serious.

Has anybody figured out what the problem is? I have the same problem.

The ticking is around my Intake Mani. and only happens when sometimes at idle, starting off from a stop, or coming to a stop. Goes for a few seconds then goes away in each situation. The RPM's are low during all them too.

have you ruled out a exhaust leak yet? It seems to me like that may be the most obvious culprit especially if it comes and goes.
Have you tried to pinpoint the location yet?
Try a 1/2" piece of hose held up to your ear, if it's a pressure (exhaust) leak you will find it that way. Your manifold is probobly cracked under the heat shield on one of the runners so every time that cylinder hits the ext stroke you hear a tic.

I have the same problem except my noise goes away after like 5 minutes of driving. I got a diagnostic test nothing wrong except mechanic told me i have a definate exhaust leak

It seems to be a viable solution, has everyone experiencing the "tick" ruled out exhaust leak?

I had a ticking sound, but it turned out to be my harmonic dampener failing.

That's an old thread, but some of the folks posting in it sounded like they had lifter tick or exhaust leaks (in other words, they hadn't ruled those possibilities out like some of the other posters).

I also have the same problem. mine is when i first start going. like i let the car warm up and very thing. but it still duz it. Mine starts around, under 2000rpm and comes here and there. Like it will go away if i drive it for 15 minutes or more. but if i park it, then come back like 20 minutes and drive again the ####in "Ticking" is still there. I have a 2G will 155000 miles and the engine has never been open. Wut sould i do?

Are you sure it's not lifter tick? When oil pressure goes up (revving above 2k rpm), the lifter tick often goes away. When the motor warms up, the oil gets "thinner" (lower viscosity) and the tick often goes away. But lifter tick can get bad enough that it never goes away.

And please use proper grammar, capitalization and punctuation in the tech forums.

Ive got this problem to and i can't figure it out. i can hear it clearly when every im drivng next to a wall on the high way or when the windows are down its crazy. If someone has the anwser please let me know as well. I don't think mine is lifter tick becuase as the rpm's go up the tick get louder..

And you checked for exhaust leaks as was already described earlier in the thread?

Talked to a guy where i work. He says back when smog pumps were used, they made a very similar sound (when there hoses were detached or they were worn out). I am having the same problem. May not be related, but my car just died, won't start now. The guy I talked to says once the pumps would wear out, they'd make that sound. He said EGR would liekly do the same (he listened to my car). Once thing i did notice. No power at all, would not rev, and could not build any boost. again, perhaps unrelated, save for the ligth detonation in low rpm after shifting gears. No CEL though. I'm gonna remove the egr equipment for inspection.
