Clemson and Simpsonville,
Hello All,

I recently installed a venom intake manifold w/ 1g TB on my 2g. I followed the instructions in the TECH/DIY forum. Everything seemed to go smoothly and I put everything back together. I set my AFPR and my TPS (using dsmlink). I went to start it for the first time and I heard what seemed to be a very loud backfire. I gave it a few more tries and the the engine turns, but that's as far as it gets. I will hear a few backfires every now and then as it turns and attempts to crank. I have looked around and everything seems to be plugged up. I could really use your help as I am not sure what could be the problem. Is the initial backfiring indicative of anything? Any ideas? Thank you.

Did you do a pressure test on the intake system to make sure its sealed? Are you running the stock 95 7-bolt motor? If so did you happen to disconnect the cam angle sensor? If not the stock motor, what engine and such are you running?

Yes, check your firing order whether it's stock or a 6 bolt swap.

Hello guys,

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I am using a 7bolt motor. From what I recall, everything is plugged up. I also have the connected the spark plug wires to there correct coil pack position. The only thing I didn't plug up was the MAP sensor thats on the very top of the stock manifold. The cam angle sensor wasn't touched. There was no need to remove it during the installation (the cam gear cover wasn't removed). Also, I know I am getting spark because i pulled the sparkplug out (attached the plug wire back to it) and had someone crank the car as I tested for spark.

Then go back to to the basics, spark, fuel and compression. Check for fuel in the cylinders, Cam timing, compression and ignition base timing of 5* BTDC. If everything checks out, move on to AFR, check your FPR and ECT (Egine Coolant Temperature) sensor.

Thanks for the help guys. It turned out that I had swapped the coil pack position on the holding fixture when I placed the coil pack back on the holding fixture after extending the line. I made the mistake of never marking it before removing it. Thanks for the help.

Old thread, but I thought I would bring it back, since I am having the same "no start" after a SMIM install. And this will still come up under future searches.

The cam/crank sensors are plugged back in, I am not getting any spark, or at least that is the first issue.
The only thing that changed besides the SMIM is the location of the coil pack, and ign mod.

The ign I put underneath bolted to one of the SMIM bolts, and the coil pack, for now, I had bolted with one bolt to the bracket that holds the brake reservoir to the firewall. Until I can either fab a bracket or order the JMF one.

Double checked the plug wiring, definitely where their suppose to be.

This is on a 95 7 bolt motor.

I'd test the power Tr. just to make sure it's still good. I bolted my like that once after putting my old SMIM on and it died right after guess it didn't like being messed with,it's somewhere to start...

Well, I got fancy and just took the coil pack and ignition module from the 94 gsx sitting next to mine, and tried those. Both with no luck, as someone mentioned to me, I did remove my A/C, and no the coils are not plugged into that plug.
I made sure of that, to grab the plug from the middle of the manifold cause I knew that was where the ignition was sitting on the stock mani.

And just to be funny, I tried switching those too, even though I had no doubt in my mind it was in the right plug, as you can guess, no luck.

I am going to really double check that there is no spark tomorrow (I pulled the #1 plug and wire and let it sit, while cranking the engine and watching the spark), just to make sure I didn't mess up on that part, I don't think I did, but this is bothering me.

I have no clue what it could be, after that. because I didn't undo any of the loom to move any wires around, so I would not think that one broke, because it was running fine before the install.

I don't see how it could be a CAS or CS, because I didn't remove those, or even touch anywhere near them, the coolant temp I don't know, if just for some strange reason decided to go bad, but I was messing with the loom on that side, to tuck it underneath.
